In this video, I establish the reference face. The reference face will determine all other dimensions of the board. I begin by placing the board cup side down for stability then I determine which direction of the grain. Once the board is positioned on the workbench I chamfer the opposing edge and begin to plane the board perpendicular to the grain along the length of the board. I started a new video series tonight on how to dimension lumber using only hand tools. I am currently woking on building a treadle lathe and have been busy dimensioning all the components for the project. The tools I am currently using are the Stanley Sweetheart #4, Stanley #62 low angle jack plane, Stanley Bailey #7, A square, Stanley marking knife, Wood river marking gauge and 3 foot long measuring stick.
