"REVERIE HARP!" a new style of Harp from a kit #2: Carving the Celtic Knot Design, (Video upgrade)

162 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 23 comments »

I spent about 3 1/2 hours carving out the background, establishing the approximate depth to the relief. Barb was busy taking pictures during the process. The Mahogany is real easy carving, but it may be a little brittle when I start carving the details. That remains to be seen.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here’s a video slideshow of the progression._The Music is from a free download Handmade Music, by “Kentucky Thunder” on the DIY ne...

"REVERIE HARP!" a new style of Harp from a kit #1: Reverie Harp Kit, Off to a pretty good start!

164 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 27 comments »

I showed Barb this kit the other day, & immediately she said, ”I want one.” When the Sweetie wants something, I usually comply to her wishes. Besides, I can try making something I’ve never done before. This is the kit I ordered, it's called a Reverie Harp.. One thing about this Harp is, anyone can play it because of the way it’s tuned. It has a real soothing sound.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a picture of the parts ...

WHAT'S UP? "While I'm out in my Shop". #10: I had to make some parquet tiles yesterday.

185 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 9 comments »

I misjudged the amount of tiles I had, so I manufactured some more yesterday. I guess I miscounted the bundles I had made up. I couldn’t find any to buy, so I made some. I made about 60 more tiles.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~This is the area I have left to do in one corner of the main shop area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Here’s some views of the tiles I made. I used some Black Ash instead of Oak, bu...

WHAT'S UP? "While I'm out in my Shop". #9: Installing Oak Parquet flooring.

190 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 16 comments »

One of the main reasons I put the new slatwall system in my shop, was because my Son brought me some Parquet flooring he had salvaged from his job. He couldn’t see throwing it in a dumpster, so he brought it to his “Dumpster Dad”. I couldn’t put down a fancy floor without doing something to the rest of the shop. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I laid some out to see what it would look like. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...

Carved Backyard Bear #2: The Chickadees' have moved on.

202 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 5 comments »

We’ve been watching the Bear for over a week now, & the little birds haven’t shown up. I think the bear didn’t meet the proper specifications, or the bird building code. I also believe the Robins, & Squirrels may have scared them away. It’s sitting too much out in the open, kind of low to the ground. I’ve heard of birds starting a nest, & leaving it for a different location.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You ca...

WHAT'S UP? "While I'm out in my Shop". #8: Slatwall storage system, Homemade, paneled walls are done now.

205 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 29 comments »

This is a continuation of #5 in this series.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have the slat wall paneling completed. Now, how am I going to arrange my tools? This is the last wall, I ripped my boards in half to 1 5/8”. I like it better this way. There’s more slots for arranging tools. The space between the slats is 5/16”. The furring is 1/4” x 1 1/8” ~~~~~~~~~~~~...

Carved Backyard Bear #1: The Chickadees' are refurbishing our backyard Bear Carving.

209 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 13 comments »

This old Bear carving is being put to some good use, Maybe a Birdhouse. The other day I heard a pecking noise, & discovered a Chickadee pecking on our Bear. At first I thought he was eating ants, but I soon found out he was building a new birdhouse inside the Bear. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ He could see it was hollow, by peeking in a hole up above.. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here he turned around &...

WHAT'S UP? "While I'm out in my Shop". #5: Slatwall storage system, homemade, switching from Pegboard.

233 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 7 comments »

I started on this shop building project shortly after I retired. I’d like to show you what I’ve accomplished so far. My garage measures 20 X 24 feet, & I wanted to partition out a shop area.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~In order to have a shop 8 feet wide, I had to resize my garage door from 12’ to 9 ‘ Notice the car hiding under a warm blanket of snow. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This...

Grave Marker for Old Rusty!

261 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 12 comments »

The same friend I had made the Gavel for, dropped by the other day. He asked me if I would carve Old Rusty’s name on this cross for him. Old Rusty had passed away one year ago on this very day, & he was missing his old buddy. It was quite a coincidence, Rusty died on my birthday in 2008. After I got started on it, I thought it would be nice to do a relief carving of Rusty. He was a Golden Retriever, so I asked my friend if he had any good pictures of Rusty. He didn...
