Benchmarks, Mentors, and Friends

513 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 24 comments »

Like most individuals, I consider myself to be self-taught. I have no formal training as a woodworker, I did not apprentice under anyone, nor do I possess any formal education in design or art. But it would be dishonest to say that I have not had any teachers. Like anyone else, I read everything that I can get my hands on and I have inflicted myself on many a hapless professional craftsmen. I want to introduce the LJ community to one of my mentors. His name is Mike Blatnick and he lives in...

Making Your Own Hardware, a Hammered Copper Finger Pull for the Tilt Front Laptop Computer Desk

777 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 23 comments »

Over the past few years, I have had the chance to build my own door handles out of copper for several commissioned art-furniture pieces. This is something I enjoy doing, and it gives my work another niche to offer. I would not say that I am a coppersmith, as there is a lot that I don’t know about the process. I am almost completely self-taught, so there is bound to be a lot I haven’t learned yet. I bought two old reprinted books on the subject of coppersmithing, and I think ...

Craftsman Dining Room Set #4: Change of Plans?

111 days ago by CaptainSkully | 2 comments »

Thanks in large part to WhatTheChuck, I’m giving serious thought to changing the design of the underbody of the table. With all due respect to Schroeder's table, which I prefer the looks of in many ways, I think the lack of a footrest underneath is a good thing, and the spindles underneath are magnificent, yet kind of a waste of time, energy, effort, and lumber as they’ll be hidden by chairs. I think the trestle-style design might be more pragmatic, and still embody the simplici...

MCAD Furniture Class #3: Design Presentation and Final Modifications

579 days ago by Jeff | 8 comments »

The next week of class was consumed by each student presenting and speaking to their design what their main tenets would be for the project. Part of the previous week’s assignment had been to pick your tenet or tenets and be prepared to stick with them. My main tenet was to see the design through and devise a way to pull off the cantilever. I knew it was going to be tough just by all the drawing work I had put into SketchUp. Seriously, there are only 6 90-deg corners (aside from all the...

Transforming a Kitchen Cookbook Nook

690 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 15 comments »

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. They had a general idea of what they wanted, but needed someone to turn the dream into wood. They were willing to adapt their ideas to mine, and vice versa, and I have really appr...

Drawings and sketches - Niece's study desk- Looking for feedback

73 days ago by KellyS | 6 comments »

My 11 year old niece asked me if I would build her a desk for her bedroom so she can study. She’s my niece and my little gluing partner, so how can I say no? Problem is, I really don’t know where to begin and really not sure whether what I’ve came up with is ergonomically correct. I don’t have the money to go “all out” on something ultra nice and she lives in a double wide mobile home (Yep, we’re from Georgia), so she doesn’t really have a lot o...

The desk

107 days ago by Ben | 2 comments »

When I got married over eight years ago my wife came along with a rather large, white desk, complete with a missing front drawer. As the story goes, this desk was once in the Swedish embassy and was taken home by my mother-in-law when it was no longer needed (probably 25 years ago now). She wanted a white desk, so she painted it. The pictures show some of the condition after many years and moves—a significant cup in the top, the aprons twisted over half an inch. I was all ready to b...

Getting back into woodworking

177 days ago by Don Bowers | 2 comments »

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome to lumberjocks! I’m anticipating tremendous growth in my woodworking skills as a result of “rubbing elbows” with you fine people. I’ve been a graphic artist and illustrator for 12 years now. Until recently, my work and family have captured the majority of my time and I have had little to spare for woodworking projects. But now things are opening up and I have two projects I’ve given myself. 1) My wife wants a pair o...

Office #4: Dimensional Furniture #3

229 days ago by clieb91 | 2 comments »

I know it has been almost a month but it has been a busy one.. with a little time here and there I was able to finish the base desk. I put the last coat of poly on it last night and was able to move it in to the office this afternoon and get that temporary desk moved out of the way. I will be taking it apart and recycling it into new furniture for DW new sewing room. The new desk fit in place great and I am now working on figuring out the next step which will more then likely be my...

Office #3: Dimensional Furniture #2

259 days ago by clieb91 | 3 comments »

Well I was able to work much of the day yesterday and today on my desk. Yesterday got stuff cut down and prepared for assembly. did some part sanding. I decided to use miter cuts for the legs similiar to my assembly tables in my shop. I like the look better then butt joints. To cut the miters I used a great miter jig I picked up at a yardsale last year for $5, best dang $5 I have spent in a long time. Of course like almost all of my projects I used the Kreg Jig. I do like it maybe a li...
