Benchmarks, Mentors, and Friends

513 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 24 comments »

Like most individuals, I consider myself to be self-taught. I have no formal training as a woodworker, I did not apprentice under anyone, nor do I possess any formal education in design or art. But it would be dishonest to say that I have not had any teachers. Like anyone else, I read everything that I can get my hands on and I have inflicted myself on many a hapless professional craftsmen. I want to introduce the LJ community to one of my mentors. His name is Mike Blatnick and he lives in...

MCAD Furniture Class #4: Building a Scale Model

573 days ago by Jeff | 14 comments »

As mentioned in the previous entry, at the suggestion of my instructor, I modified the design such that the whole top would be a torsion grid. This approach did present its own problem though. Since the design called for the ‘leg’ to act as a massive tenon seated in the underside of the top, I would need a lot of bulk around the leg. I considered laminating solid wood pieces to build it up. I decided against that; I can’t recall why. Instead, I opted to take what I call t...

MCAD Furniture Class #3: Design Presentation and Final Modifications

578 days ago by Jeff | 8 comments »

The next week of class was consumed by each student presenting and speaking to their design what their main tenets would be for the project. Part of the previous week’s assignment had been to pick your tenet or tenets and be prepared to stick with them. My main tenet was to see the design through and devise a way to pull off the cantilever. I knew it was going to be tough just by all the drawing work I had put into SketchUp. Seriously, there are only 6 90-deg corners (aside from all the...

MCAD Furniture Class #2: Inspiration

581 days ago by Jeff | 11 comments »

As I mentioned in the last entry, I found a project that jumped off the page and gave me the inspiration I needed to start the design for my project. I picked up the book Tradition in Contemporary Furniture and started thumbing through the pages… Here is a shot of the cover for anyone interested. This is the work that gave my creative juices a jump-start:Copyright 2001 by The Furniture Society. Artist: Gord Peteran, Toronto, Ontario, 1999. Photo by Elaine Brodie. It reminded me...

First Project of 2008 Complete

653 days ago by jackd942 | 5 comments »

Well, I finally finished my Kitchen Secretary project and I must admit that I learned a ton! It’s actually been done for a week or so, but I just mounted the cabinet and installed all the hardware yesterday. This was a fun project…definitely rewarding as my wife absolutely loves it. Now she’s picked out a jewelry/lingerie chest she wants, so I guess it’s back to the shop after it warms up just a bit. This jewelry chest promises to be a big learning experience consideri...

Home Remodel Projects #1: Past couple projects

670 days ago by Kevin | 4 comments »

OK, so I haven’t been doing a very good job of getting my projects up here. I’m afraid I cannot wow you with their beauty or their awe inspiring design such as many of you have posted. BUT!!! I am still proud of them and most importantly, the wife is happy. And when the wife is happy, the tools keep coming. My wife and I have done all the work ourselves. I have posted mostly finished project pics as I have no in progress pics. 1st is our bathroom in the basement: new til...

First Project for 2008

682 days ago by jackd942 | 6 comments »

Here is my first project for 2008…It is a kitchen secretary. At least I call it a secretary. The desk is going to be separate from the main cabinet, but I saw one similar in a photo and liked it. We needed a small space to do things (pay bills/write grocery lists/do taxes/etc.) so I decided this would be a very useful project. It consists of two pieces…First an upper cabinet with glass doors that has a lower portion with “cubbies” for sorting mail/papers. Second a smal...

Transforming a Kitchen Cookbook Nook

690 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 15 comments »

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. They had a general idea of what they wanted, but needed someone to turn the dream into wood. They were willing to adapt their ideas to mine, and vice versa, and I have really appr...

On deck...

709 days ago by tig | 2 comments »

Winter is here, which means the motorbikes have been winterized and garaged, and there is once again time for some woodworking. However, in order to do that, I have to move the motorbikes out of the garage every time I go to work. Small price to pay for having all the toys, though. A few months back, my friend Jared picked up a LOT of rough sawn 4/4 walnut for $1.50 / bf. I love walnut. I purchased a small amount from him, as I didn’t know what I was going to use it for; how much I w...

Building a Carved Functional-Art Chair to Match the Tilt Front Desk

767 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 16 comments »

I’ve had a fun week. I’m building a chair to match the Tilt Front Desk that I previously posted, and blogged about. If you want to read about the desk, the posting link is given at the bottom of this blog. The desk chair is designed to fit the customer’s kitchen, as the desk is being placed in the kitchen area. She loves to cook, and hopes to move her laptop computer station to the kitchen where she can capture her thoughts on her cooking blog, and do more writing. ...
