Baby Furniture #2: Designing a Crib

190 days ago by Kevin | 4 comments »

I want to send out a special thank you to Randy for sending me a set of plans. But, I chose to do things the hard way and design my own crib. I did use Randy’s plans for the critical dimensions, but other than that, it is pretty much my own design. I used SketchUp for the design. I think this crib will be a little unique. I wanted a crib that would be easy for my wife to change the sheets, adjustable mattress height, and an adjustable front slide gate. The crib will be made mostly...

Inspired Design #4: Leila & Massimo Vignelli

258 days ago by FritzM | 0 comments »

This is a wonderfully casual interview with two renowned designers. Even if their designs disagree with your own thoughts on the subject, they offer some very insightful views on why and how they design. Also, a brief description of how the design for their sofa evolved through discussions with their manufacturer. There is a section in the middle where they are preparing a meal and their cats are running around….. try to push through because there are some great moments all the way t...

The Craftsman's Path #11: Sam Maloof on design

452 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 0 comments »

I’ve recently been doing some reading on various designers in search of guidance and inspiration. Sam Maloof has always been one of my favorites. In doing so, I came across some quotes from Maloof that express some of his philosophies on woodworking and design. In this post on my blog I explore these and share some of my thoughts on them. I’d be interested in hearing the perspectives on this subject from all of you LumberJocks out there. Thanks for reading!

The Never Ending Bedroom Furniture Project #1: The Idea is Born

466 days ago by Muzhik | 3 comments »

Welcome to my first ever blog. As this develops, please let me know how I could make it better or more interesting. I can be wordy at times, so let me know if you don’t want to read as much about such a mundane subject as building a bed. Part 1: The Idea is Born The first part of my process for building any furniture for my own home is by far the longest. I have had designs floating around in my head for five years on this bed – just refining them here and there – once in awhi...

The Best of 'Wood Art" #9: "Prepping the Wood" --by RusticWodArt

373 days ago by frank | 4 comments »

....furthering my ganders, as one would take on examining their progress in the principles of what it take to work the wood by hand! Some-times it does my soul best to just stop and take an inventory of what is happening here with the tools and the wood. Many are the stages of phases that go into the making of a piece of ‘wood art’....design, working the wood by hand, but there all-ways is the need to pay attention to the care and detail of my tools and wood. Further Notes on: ...

The Craftsman's Path #49: Modern Saker Table - The Design Process

38 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 3 comments »

Deviating from more traditional pieces, I was asked to design and build a table with more modern styling. I started the design process by evaluating the constraints and developing some ideas in my sketchbook before moving on to a more refined design in SKetchup. You can take a look at the latest post on my blog for more details. Thanks for reading!

Bookcase Challenge04 #2: Building the "crown"

78 days ago by lightweightladyleftie | 3 comments »

This bookcase was designed to camouflage ductwork and to replace a portion of the book storage from a 10’ x 6’ shelving unit that we removed to remodel our dining room. The next three pictures show the ductwork and the steps from paneling to painted drywall. The horizontal ducts were covered in oak with rails and stiles cut to enclose lighting panels to match the kitchen woodwork and lighting (not shown, around the corner to the left). Next I began working on the crown to e...

The Craftsman's Path #43: Moving the target in design

170 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 1 comment »

Recently, I was watching Neil Lamens’ interview (Part 1 and Part 2) with Wendell Castle. Neil did a great job talking with Mr. Castle about his approach to the craft and art of woodworking and his approach to design. I wrote about my thoughts on the interview and what Mr. Castle’s words meant to me in this post on my blog. Take a look and give me your thoughts. I’d be interested in hearing your perspectives. Thanks for reading!
