I have been thinking about making another table lately. I had so much fun building the Sewing Table that I wanted to make something for our house. And my wife has wanted a place to put her collection of jewelry. So we came up with this idea (actually it was mostly her idea) and I started doing some designing today. This is what I came up with so far.

For some two years, I carried a rough outline of a case for my wife’s piano books in the back of my mind. Having been scared away by AutoCad’s threat to my credit card balance, and then frustrated with TurboCad’s coming-through-the-back-door work method, I decided to bite the bullet and try Sketchup. I designed this bookcase using the Golden Mean ratio. The narrowest part of the side frames (where the middle shelf is located) is 0.6 the height of the bookcase.

The dyed maple frames are doweled except for the top of the center stile, which has two pocket screws. (The center stile and lower front stretcher are not the same thickness as the other frame parts, giving the project a nice shadow line.)

Okay, here’s my best shot. I tried to use “sketch up,” but I figured that, combined with tax time (I’m a CPA) the frustration was too much. I hand-drew my idea from a sketch I made during singing practice a few weeks ago, while listening to the Basses and Baritones (or, if you want an inside joke, the Third and Fourth Tenors) screw up their parts while the director tore out what little hair he has left. Of course, I did this while watching some weird Sherlock Holmes...

This design is a takeoff of a night table design I did last year. The influence is the architecture of Bhutan. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, one of only about three places in the world that share this type of architecture. Exciting Progress..
I am making some great progress on my closet project. I currently have the copper rods in a machine shop where the parts are being fabricated.
The clients and I had talked about changing the lights to better illuminate the fine work that I have produced. While the metal work is being done I decided to go ahead and install the new lights.

Finished!
Well it’s been a long journey and it did not end without one extra push.
I finished installing the copper handles Monday by 11:30. There was a couple of scratches but I was certain I could buff them out. This is a skill that goes with the territory. I worked on the finish for the next six hours and I could not get the finish to blend.

I started woodworking in my early 20s (many year ago). Prior to this the only real exposure to woodworking I had was building remote controlled model aircroft out of balsa. I started by taking a year long rough carpentry course at a local community college. What does this have to do with workbenchs you wonder.. Another Milestone
I am pretty excited to share with you guys today’s progress. I got all of the handle pieces finished!
Next I have some touch up on the doors and the final install. I am sure I will have a full day of technical sweating.
I had to brush the pieces again on the wire wheel to brighten the finish. I then hung them from the ceiling and wiped them down thoroughly with acetone. This strips any oil from the surface.

So I am going to try to build some furniture to sell when I don’t have cabinets to build. This is my first attempt at designing furniture.
