I have been fascinated with The Fibonacci Sequence and The Golden Rectangle for some time. I finally got around to building a Fibonacci Gauge that was featured in WOOD Magazine.
The guage maintains a consatnt proportion of 1:1.618 between the points. It is used to help determine visually appealing proportional dimensions. I am looking forward to using the guage in future projects.

Hey everybody! I was just reading and responding to someones forum topic about shop design, and I remembered that a while ago I downloaded a Sketchup component library that contained models of most of the power equipment you would find in a wood shop. I got it from the downloads/components page of the old Sketchup (pre Google). I don’t remember who did the modeling but they graciously put it up there for anyone to download and use. Here is a couple of screen shots of the stuff thats in...

I had a request for the dimensions I used. These are a bit ugly because I just pulled the dimensions as I needed them and was indiscriminate of the plane I was on in the rendering and there are duplicates thoughout. My apologies but it was just for my own benefit when I added them. However, I wanted to get them posted as I’m already a day a late with the post.
Bob Babcock, if you view this thread, can you suggest a place to house the actual sketchup file? I don’t know if I want...

Hello everyone! Since I discovered Sketchup several years ago (I have been Skecthing since release 3..pre Google) I have spent a great deal of time watching tutorials and prowling through the forums trying to learn as much about this great software as I can! Since I have been a member here I have seen some great blogs by other members about Sketchup and how to use it, so I thought I would throw my hat in the ring! I see allot of people saying I wish I could use Sketchup better, or I gotta lea...

Ok, so the next piece of shop furniture that needs updating is my radial arm saw table. The original table I built was meant to be a temporary home for the old saw after its restoration about two years ago.
I spent some down time at work drawing a few different designs and ideas and then put it in sketchup when I got home. Please… let’s discuss the design before I actually make any cuts! I am totally open to any constructive criticism.
Here is what I have come up with so far:
Th...

Well, for kicks and giggles I decided to try to create a bookcase entry in Sketchup for the competition. I have no delusions of winning anything, but I thought I’d give it a try. I though of what I could do to make a traditional bookcase stand-out, and not coming-up with anything I decided to mess-around with curved surfaces in Sketchup. After some tinkering, I had a basic design that you see here:
It’s more of an art piece than a bookcase I suppose, but it was t...

Inspired by this fine huntboard
This bookcase has 3 sections, the 2 on the ends will handle most novel while the center section is for larger books that never seem to fit in a normal book case, there is 160 ” of shelve space in the 70” piecehttp://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff175/jledington2002/Scan_2.jpg
This design I pulled from my design notebook. It is a design That worked up for a customer, but I never got to build. I think it would look good build out of walnut with a...

I attempted to design more than a bookcase I was trying for a piece of universal furniture. My plan is to build two identical book cases that can be used alone, stacked or incorporated with a desk top. This design would be great for small apartments or school dorms. The curved frames are made using bent wood lamination, and the side panels from ¾’ Hardwood veneer plywood which would add strength and stability to the design. To give the cabinets a look of fine furniture I would use box joint...

My Design ProcessFor this contest, I wanted to design an Arts and crafts style bookcase with some unique features. When designing a new piece of furniture, I prefer to start from the intended uses of the piece, any requirements for the dimensions, and any preferences for the style. In this case, the primary requirement was that the bookcase be “one of a kind”.
Based on this, I developed my own short list of requirements for the piece as follows:1. The bookcase must offer a s...
