Recently, I was watching Neil Lamens’ interview (Part 1 and Part 2) with Wendell Castle. Neil did a great job talking with Mr. Castle about his approach to the craft and art of woodworking and his approach to design.
I wrote about my thoughts on the interview and what Mr. Castle’s words meant to me in this post on my blog. Take a look and give me your thoughts. I’d be interested in hearing your perspectives. Thanks for reading!

So I am going to try to build some furniture to sell when I don’t have cabinets to build. This is my first attempt at designing furniture. I would like to get some input on a couple aspects of this coffee table, if you guys don’t mind.I will be making matching end tables too, but I haven’t drawn them yet. I drew this on Google Sketchup. The plan is to make them out of Oak, and finish with black lacquer. I want the Oak grain to really stand out, and I think the lacquer w...

I want to send out a special thank you to Randy for sending me a set of plans.
But, I chose to do things the hard way and design my own crib. I did use Randy’s plans for the critical dimensions, but other than that, it is pretty much my own design.
I used SketchUp for the design. I think this crib will be a little unique. I wanted a crib that would be easy for my wife to change the sheets, adjustable mattress height, and an adjustable front slide gate. The crib will be made mostly...

72”x24” 1-3/4” thick Top = $25Groz vise = $40Misc fasteners and hardware = $10Building your own workbench that actually fits in a tight space that has no space for a workbench = PRICELESS
Now I just need to use scrap wood, and design legs to hold the workbench horizontally… I made it extra tall, cause every other bench I work on I get back pains from having to bend too much.
In the mean time, I just improvise and put something under to hold it straight just so that I can work on it ...

With some impetus from a post that Chuck Bender (acanthuscarver) recently wrote, I discussed some of my thoughts on design in a recent post at my blog. As the title suggests, my take is that: “Simple is Elegant”.
I’d be interested in your thoughts on the subject. Take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks for reading!

Talk about extreme curves, this design takes the cake!
Even though it wasn’t built out of wood, it very well could have been. Fibeglass makes it lighter. Here’s how the chair was made:
“The chair was sculpted at 1/8th scale using Sculpey clay. From there, the model was cut into ¼ inch slices. These slices were scanned, blown up to full scale, and plotted to be used as a template for the full scale model. From there, the templates were adhered to 2 inch pink insulat...

This is a wonderfully casual interview with two renowned designers. Even if their designs disagree with your own thoughts on the subject, they offer some very insightful views on why and how they design. Also, a brief description of how the design for their sofa evolved through discussions with their manufacturer. There is a section in the middle where they are preparing a meal and their cats are running around….. try to push through because there are some great moments all the way t...

This design is a takeoff of a night table design I did last year. The influence is the architecture of Bhutan. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, one of only about three places in the world that share this type of architecture. Bhutanese temples are characterized by their inward sloping walls and graduated windows.Front View:
I used a combination of the golden ratio and Hambidge Progression to come up with the dimensions. The bookcase is open on both sides and can be plac...

My Design ProcessFor this contest, I wanted to design an Arts and crafts style bookcase with some unique features. When designing a new piece of furniture, I prefer to start from the intended uses of the piece, any requirements for the dimensions, and any preferences for the style. In this case, the primary requirement was that the bookcase be “one of a kind”.
Based on this, I developed my own short list of requirements for the piece as follows:1. The bookcase must offer a s...

The following is my entry into the bookcase design contest.
Several weeks ago a potential client approached me with an unusual problem. She wanted a bookcase for her new condo. Not unusual except that it needed to be wall mounted, could have NO back, and needed to match the color of her current cabinents. That’s correct, wall mounted with no backing, an open bookcase. Apparently, several other contractors looked at it and told her it was impossible or made excuses as to what coul...
