Projects #6: John White FWW Workbench - Dimensions

533 days ago by Jeff | 5 comments »

I had a request for the dimensions I used. These are a bit ugly because I just pulled the dimensions as I needed them and was indiscriminate of the plane I was on in the rendering and there are duplicates thoughout. My apologies but it was just for my own benefit when I added them. However, I wanted to get them posted as I’m already a day a late with the post. Bob Babcock, if you view this thread, can you suggest a place to house the actual sketchup file? I don’t know if I want...

The Craftsman's Path #49: Modern Saker Table - The Design Process

38 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 3 comments »

Deviating from more traditional pieces, I was asked to design and build a table with more modern styling. I started the design process by evaluating the constraints and developing some ideas in my sketchbook before moving on to a more refined design in SKetchup. You can take a look at the latest post on my blog for more details. Thanks for reading!

Opposing Arch Table #1: Sketchup Design

150 days ago by Blake | 17 comments »

I have been thinking about making another table lately. I had so much fun building the Sewing Table that I wanted to make something for our house. And my wife has wanted a place to put her collection of jewelry. So we came up with this idea (actually it was mostly her idea) and I started doing some designing today. This is what I came up with so far. The idea is to make a hall table with a lifting “lid” and a hidden jewelry case underneath with lots of room for necklaces, brace...

MCAD Furniture Class #3: Design Presentation and Final Modifications

255 days ago by Jeff | 8 comments »

The next week of class was consumed by each student presenting and speaking to their design what their main tenets would be for the project. Part of the previous week’s assignment had been to pick your tenet or tenets and be prepared to stick with them. My main tenet was to see the design through and devise a way to pull off the cantilever. I knew it was going to be tough just by all the drawing work I had put into SketchUp. Seriously, there are only 6 90-deg corners (aside from all the...

Modern Modular Bookcase

277 days ago by bfd | 9 comments »

This is my entry for the bookcase challenge. I designed my bookcase to be modular and have simple modern lines. I eliminated the “top” and “bottom” to give the piece an open feel and to reinforce the feeling that the shelves are “floating”. The case or “shroud” is 1-1/2” thick and made up of (2) 3/4” qtr sawn ash plywood or veneered mdf. The sides would be clear coated to contrast with the walnut shelves. The back would be...

Entry Closet Project #5: OH, Baby It's Hot!

376 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 34 comments »

Exciting Progress.. I am making some great progress on my closet project. I currently have the copper rods in a machine shop where the parts are being fabricated. The clients and I had talked about changing the lights to better illuminate the fine work that I have produced. While the metal work is being done I decided to go ahead and install the new lights. WOW! Man-OH-Man! Does it ever look fantastic! Here is the closet with the old lights: Here is the closet with the n...

Reviews - Books #1: 7 Books on Boxes

453 days ago by Dekker | 10 comments »

Boxes and boxmaking have always been popular subjects for many hobby woodworkers. What other project type offers such variety in technique, finish, and final application? A box project can often be completed in a weekend, and noone can ever say they have too many boxes! The first place to start when considering making wooden boxes is to get some inspiration. Since the best place to get inspiration is to see other finished boxes, I suggest you start by looking through some books on wood...

Changing Table/Dresser #2: More Detailed SketchUp Drawings

500 days ago by chambbj | 2 comments »

I’ve updated my SketchUp drawings; still no dust panels, shelves, or door. Clicking on any photo should take you to it’s Flickr page, with higher resolutions if it’s too hard to see some of the detail here. Here’s an exploded view of the current plan, to reveal some of the internal blocking and joinery plans. The current thought is to use mostly 4/4 Lyptus, except on the back and drawer bottoms, where I’ll use plywood. Dimensioned drawing of the divid...

Herman Miller Design and Production Video

3 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 17 comments »

What I should be doing… is getting my shop in order because I got a truckload of wood and sheet goods from guy that was moving his shop. I have a built-in banquette to get going on in the shop now that the holidays and family mayhem are behind us (in a good grandkids way.) I found gold! Actually what I found was a Herman Miller prduction video while digging through the Furnitude blog by LJ member Mitch. I just LOVE Herman Miller. What is very important about this video is th...
