Furniture Design #1: Fibonacci gauge

847 days ago by David | 27 comments »

1 • 1 • 2 • 3 • 5 • 8 • 13 • 21 • 34 – The Fibonacci Sequence I have been fascinated with The Fibonacci Sequence and The Golden Rectangle for some time. I finally got around to building a Fibonacci Gauge that was featured in WOOD Magazine. The guage maintains a consatnt proportion of 1:1.618 between the points. It is used to help determine visually appealing proportional dimensions. I am looking forward to using the guage in future projects. Follow the text below for so...

Hello everyone! Since I discovered Sketchup several years ago (I have been Skecthing since release 3..pre Google) I have spent a great deal of time watching tutorials and prowling through the forums trying to learn as much about this great software as I can! Since I have been a member here I have seen some great blogs by other members about Sketchup and how to use it, so I thought I would throw my hat in the ring! I see allot of people saying I wish I could use Sketchup better, or I gotta lea...

The Golden Ratio Quick Tip

376 days ago by Jojo | 9 comments »

Hi everybody, We woodworkers are always struggling with proper design and proportions. Luckily there are a few standards set more or less in stone that help us cover the bases of our furniture drafting process. On the other hand, we Lumberjocks are always either on the workshop or with our faces glued to the screen, so today I thought useful to give you a little tip that would ease that elusive search of the El Dorado (no pun intended) of design: calculating The Golden Ratio or The Golden ...

Sketchup As A Woodworking Design Tool #2: The Virtual Woodshop

722 days ago by Brad_Nailor | 16 comments »

Hey everybody! I was just reading and responding to someones forum topic about shop design, and I remembered that a while ago I downloaded a Sketchup component library that contained models of most of the power equipment you would find in a wood shop. I got it from the downloads/components page of the old Sketchup (pre Google). I don’t remember who did the modeling but they graciously put it up there for anyone to download and use. Here is a couple of screen shots of the stuff thats in...

My New Radial Arm Saw Table #1: First Stage of Design

676 days ago by Blake | 12 comments »

Ok, so the next piece of shop furniture that needs updating is my radial arm saw table. The original table I built was meant to be a temporary home for the old saw after its restoration about two years ago. I spent some down time at work drawing a few different designs and ideas and then put it in sketchup when I got home. Please… let’s discuss the design before I actually make any cuts! I am totally open to any constructive criticism. Here is what I have come up with so far: Th...

Interpreting Design #1: Jewelry Box

212 days ago by DocT | 8 comments »

I rarely build from plans. Never have. I’m not really sure why. Maybe it’s a commentary on my inherent need to be right. I am, however, not immune to inspiration! My favorite part of LJs is seeing all of your projects. I have been exposed to some truly amazing pieces. My favorites are the truly original designs. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about design. What makes a design original, unique, or inspiring? There are any number of “formulas” for good...

Opposing Arch Table #1: Sketchup Design

475 days ago by Blake | 17 comments »

I have been thinking about making another table lately. I had so much fun building the Sewing Table that I wanted to make something for our house. And my wife has wanted a place to put her collection of jewelry. So we came up with this idea (actually it was mostly her idea) and I started doing some designing today. This is what I came up with so far. The idea is to make a hall table with a lifting “lid” and a hidden jewelry case underneath with lots of room for necklaces, brace...

Workbench - Start to Finish #1: Design

509 days ago by beaudex | 3 comments »

I started woodworking in my early 20s (many year ago). Prior to this the only real exposure to woodworking I had was building remote controlled model aircroft out of balsa. I started by taking a year long rough carpentry course at a local community college. What does this have to do with workbenchs you wonder.. I believe a well designed workbench starts with your experience with workbenches. Thinking back I have had the oppourtunity to use a few workbenches and there are a few things I discov...
