Okay, here’s my best shot. I tried to use “sketch up,” but I figured that, combined with tax time (I’m a CPA) the frustration was too much. I hand-drew my idea from a sketch I made during singing practice a few weeks ago, while listening to the Basses and Baritones (or, if you want an inside joke, the Third and Fourth Tenors) screw up their parts while the director tore out what little hair he has left. Of course, I did this while watching some weird Sherlock Holmes...

I designed this bookcase using the Golden Mean ratio. The narrowest part of the side frames (where the middle shelf is located) is 0.6 the height of the bookcase.

The dyed maple frames are doweled except for the top of the center stile, which has two pocket screws. (The center stile and lower front stretcher are not the same thickness as the other frame parts, giving the project a nice shadow line.)

I got an E-mail a day or so ago metioning this challenge, so I thought I would give it a go. I tried the Sketch thingy but thought it would take far too much time to draw out my design, so I did it on paper.
I have made a few pieces in my shop, but I’m still learning how to make furniture. I could probably make this, but it would take me some time.

I had already started working on the design for this bookcase when I became aware of this contest. Realizing that my built-in application (designed to conceal ductwork) was quite different from the needs of most people, I slightly redesigned the crown to make it a free-standing bookcase (although, for the sake of safety, I would still attach it to a wall if I were to place this one in my home).

This is my entry for the bookcase challenge. I designed my bookcase to be modular and have simple modern lines. I eliminated the “top” and “bottom” to give the piece an open feel and to reinforce the feeling that the shelves are “floating”. I attempted to design more than a bookcase I was trying for a piece of universal furniture. My plan is to build two identical book cases that can be used alone, stacked or incorporated with a desk top. This design would be great for small apartments or school dorms.The curved frames are made using bent wood lamination, and the side panels from ¾’ Hardwood veneer plywood which would add strength and stability to the design. Slide Together & Apart Bookcase
This bookcase was completed in early February, 2008 and accomplished a number of objectives:

Ok here is my entry for the bookcase challenge. This piece is a complex design and I hope that I will not build this one. Although beings that my wife loves this design it will probably have to be built. The original design was to be made from a sustainable material. Well, for kicks and giggles I decided to try to create a bookcase entry in Sketchup for the competition. I have no delusions of winning anything, but I thought I’d give it a try.
