What I should be doing…
is getting my shop in order because I got a truckload of wood and sheet goods from guy that was moving his shop. I have a built-in banquette to get going on in the shop now that the holidays and family mayhem are behind us (in a good grandkids way.)
I found gold!
Actually what I found was a Herman Miller prduction video while digging through the Furnitude blog by LJ member Mitch. I just LOVE Herman Miller.
What is very important about this video is th...

Deviating from more traditional pieces, I was asked to design and build a table with more modern styling. I started the design process by evaluating the constraints and developing some ideas in my sketchbook before moving on to a more refined design in SKetchup. You can take a look at the latest post on my blog for more details. Thanks for reading!

Those of you who have already seen my projects might have noticed the abundance of web clamps. I kind of like them. They are cheap and handy. But that’s not all that makes them an ideal companion for wood. The straps those web clamps are made of have a rather low modulus which means they expand if you put force on them – quite in the same amount wood does. They actually have a similar expansion/shrinkage with changes of humidity compared to wood. Quite unlike steel. Screws and nai...

Hi everybody,
We woodworkers are always struggling with proper design and proportions. Luckily there are a few standards set more or less in stone that help us cover the bases of our furniture drafting process. On the other hand, we Lumberjocks are always either on the workshop or with our faces glued to the screen, so today I thought useful to give you a little tip that would ease that elusive search of the El Dorado (no pun intended) of design: calculating The Golden Ratio or The Golden ...

This bookcase was designed to camouflage ductwork and to replace a portion of the book storage from a 10’ x 6’ shelving unit that we removed to remodel our dining room.
The next three pictures show the ductwork and the steps from paneling to painted drywall. The horizontal ducts were covered in oak with rails and stiles cut to enclose lighting panels to match the kitchen woodwork and lighting (not shown, around the corner to the left).
Next I began working on the crown to e...

I am happy to share with fellow Lumberjocks my first audio podcast. My special guest is none other than Neil Lamens, of Furnitology Productions fame. I invite you to listen to the podcast – there is also a download link to the MP3 file.
I extracted the following from the most recent post on my blog:
This is the first audio podcast from Sandal Woods. Neil Lamens of Furnitology Productions is my guest; we discuss Form in design. The following are a few of the things we discussed:

Building on the previous post in this series, it’s time to explore Graham Blackburn’s second pillar of design: Construction. When one thinks of construction in woodworking, the first thought is inevitably joinery. While joinery is definitely one element of the construction of a piece of furniture, as you might expect, there’s more to the equation. Take a look at this post for a discussion of construction as it relates to design, according the Blackburn. Thanks for reading.

This is a video produced by my multi-talented Etsian colleague Eric Beug. In addition to producing, shooting and editing the video he also composed the score. Check it out!Process is a new Etsy video series that features the intimate relationship formed between Etsy sellers and the handmade items that they create and make available to the world through their online shops. Process is not to be confused with a How-To video, as each video is intended to show each seller’s unique artistic v...
