The Never Ending Bedroom Furniture Project #1: The Idea is Born

466 days ago by Muzhik | 3 comments »

Welcome to my first ever blog. As this develops, please let me know how I could make it better or more interesting. I can be wordy at times, so let me know if you don’t want to read as much about such a mundane subject as building a bed. Part 1: The Idea is Born The first part of my process for building any furniture for my own home is by far the longest. I have had designs floating around in my head for five years on this bed – just refining them here and there – once in awhi...

Interactive Design

480 days ago by Chris Davis | 3 comments »

For the most part the design process is left to me on the furniture I build. The customer just gives me a general idea and I go with it. There is the occasion that the customer would like or needs to have their hand in the designing process. Case in point, I have a Murphy wall bed customer that ordered my Euro Murphy bed. They wanted to change it up a little by adding a few extra rectangle blocks. She had an idea of what she wanted and thought it look good on paper. After temporar...

Process #1: Process: Sustainable Wooden Jewelry by PrasseinDesignStudio

103 days ago by weirdwolf | 2 comments »

This is a video produced by my multi-talented Etsian colleague Eric Beug. In addition to producing, shooting and editing the video he also composed the score. Check it out!Process is a new Etsy video series that features the intimate relationship formed between Etsy sellers and the handmade items that they create and make available to the world through their online shops. Process is not to be confused with a How-To video, as each video is intended to show each seller’s unique artistic v...

Greene and Greene influenced bookcase design

265 days ago by RLS | 2 comments »

This bookcase design is my interpretation of a combination of some Greene and Greene designs. Unfortunately, my computer skills are not good enough to show the details. In the 3D file, for example(which created the rendered drawing below), I couldn’t get the proportions of the feet right (they are not as flat as they appear in the rendered drawing, below). Nor could I get the crown moulding “cloud lift” detail to show except as some dashed lines. Further, one aspect of t...

Changing Table/Dresser #2: More Detailed SketchUp Drawings

500 days ago by chambbj | 2 comments »

I’ve updated my SketchUp drawings; still no dust panels, shelves, or door. Clicking on any photo should take you to it’s Flickr page, with higher resolutions if it’s too hard to see some of the detail here. Here’s an exploded view of the current plan, to reveal some of the internal blocking and joinery plans. The current thought is to use mostly 4/4 Lyptus, except on the back and drawer bottoms, where I’ll use plywood. Dimensioned drawing of the divid...

The Craftsman's Path #43: Moving the target in design

170 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 1 comment »

Recently, I was watching Neil Lamens’ interview (Part 1 and Part 2) with Wendell Castle. Neil did a great job talking with Mr. Castle about his approach to the craft and art of woodworking and his approach to design. I wrote about my thoughts on the interview and what Mr. Castle’s words meant to me in this post on my blog. Take a look and give me your thoughts. I’d be interested in hearing your perspectives. Thanks for reading!

Bookcase submission for Challenge 04

262 days ago by Brass | 1 comment »

The following is my entry into the bookcase design contest. Several weeks ago a potential client approached me with an unusual problem. She wanted a bookcase for her new condo. Not unusual except that it needed to be wall mounted, could have NO back, and needed to match the color of her current cabinents. That’s correct, wall mounted with no backing, an open bookcase. Apparently, several other contractors looked at it and told her it was impossible or made excuses as to what coul...

Planning and Building a Jig #3: Safety

387 days ago by Peter O | 1 comment »

Workshop SafetyI can’t overstate the importance of workshop safety. Don’t wear loose clothing, jewelry, or hair. Your tools come with guards for a reason – use them! If you aren’t sure the action you are about to take is safe, then assume it isn’t and figure out a better way to do it. Keep your work area clean, especially underfoot. If you are using a tool – power tool or hand tool – wear eye protection. The best protection against injury is your brain – it m...

wood with web #1: thoughts on separating tension and compression

41 days ago by Justus | 0 comments »

Those of you who have already seen my projects might have noticed the abundance of web clamps. I kind of like them. They are cheap and handy. But that’s not all that makes them an ideal companion for wood. The straps those web clamps are made of have a rather low modulus which means they expand if you put force on them – quite in the same amount wood does. They actually have a similar expansion/shrinkage with changes of humidity compared to wood. Quite unlike steel. Screws and nai...
