The next week of class was consumed by each student presenting and speaking to their design what their main tenets would be for the project. Part of the previous week’s assignment had been to pick your tenet or tenets and be prepared to stick with them. This design is a takeoff of a night table design I did last year. The influence is the architecture of Bhutan. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, one of only about three places in the world that share this type of architecture. Bhutanese temples are characterized by their inward sloping walls and graduated windows.Front View:

When I learned about the bookcase design challenge I immediately wanted to design this bookshelf. I came up with the original idea when I took a furniture design class at BYU from Kip Christensen. I decided then to fully design and build a different project which I will post later on my blog.

I had already started working on the design for this bookcase when I became aware of this contest. Realizing that my built-in application (designed to conceal ductwork) was quite different from the needs of most people, I slightly redesigned the crown to make it a free-standing bookcase (although, for the sake of safety, I would still attach it to a wall if I were to place this one in my home).

72”x24” 1-3/4” thick Top = $25Groz vise = $40Misc fasteners and hardware = $10Building your own workbench that actually fits in a tight space that has no space for a workbench = PRICELESS
Now I just need to use scrap wood, and design legs to hold the workbench horizontally… I made it extra tall, cause every other bench I work on I get back pains from having to bend too much.
In the mean time, I just improvise and put something under to hold it straight just so that I can work on it ...

When I read about challenge 04 in Popular Woodworking Newsletter my first thought was to give it a try. The next thought was to design something that didn’t look like a box. Then I remembered that I had turned a square book case 45 degrees and put it into a corner. From there I took inspiration from other project I have built.
