Unisaw 34-450 restoration #1: Starting from zero

539 days ago by Alexdi | 4 comments »

About three months ago, I wanted to build a small furniture piece for my rec room. This quickly ballooned (as these things do) into putting together a full workshop. The plan to pick up an old $100 portable saw morphed into a recent contractor saw, and then on a whim, into a cabinet saw. The find: I discovered a late 1960s 34-450 Unisaw listed on CL for $500. No fence, miter gauge, blade guard, table, tools, or mobile base. Just a saw. Two weeks later, it was relisted for $250. The saw ...

Help me choose my first table saw!

1211 days ago by Jonathan | 18 comments »

As you can read by the title, I do not have, nor have I ever owned a table saw. And I think it’s about time I acquired one. I have a project I will be starting of built-in bookcases with a faceframe and doors, plus an adjoining mantel that I feel will be a heck of a lot easier to complete if I have a table saw for the task. That project is here http://lumberjocks.com/JonathanG/blog/13322 if you would like to give any input, advice or thoughts on that. (Beginning here, the next three ...

My Shop #2: Table Saw Fence

1302 days ago by DannyBoy | 5 comments »

To continue the series of setting up my Craftsman table saw, I’d like to go over adding the aftermarket Delta T2 fence system. I have basically followed the same steps as Jamie did on his setup. For the most part, this is the way to go for this setup. A couple of things before I get started. First, you will have to drill new holes in the mounting brackets for the fence system. There is no way around this. If you take your time and pay attention, you’ll do alright. Second,...

The search for new equipment! #2: Delta Tenoning Jig 34-184 at Lowes!

1372 days ago by Dustin Ward (aka Tearen) | 11 comments »

Just a heads up to anyone near a Lowes. I stopped in my local Lowes during my lunch hour today just to look at all the lovely power tools. While walking down one of the isles that contain secondary equipment I noticed a clearance tag on some Delta Branded items. Usually these don’t catch my eye, but then I noticed the tag was for a Tenoning Jig. So, got down on my knee to look on the lower shelf. There is was… a single, unopened, Delta 34-184. This is the same Jig th...

From Rust to Lust, can I bring it back? #6: Tedious Tape-up... and jigs? Bed/Fence protection??

393 days ago by GlennsGrandson | 4 comments »

Hello again, I’ve got quite a bit accomplished since my last post, but it took much longer than anticipated. I had to finish cleaning a few little pieces here and there and wipe off the never ending paint dust with mineral spirits. Once I’d clean a piece I’d tape it off, lots of masking tape and razor blades. The only pieces I have left are the pieces of the head. I have to clean up the head yet and probably replace the bearings, they felt good and sounded good but they prob...

From Rust to Lust, can I bring it back? #3: Got a little faint from the paint...

404 days ago by GlennsGrandson | 4 comments »

So I stripped it last night, and a little more tonight until it was R rated. Primed some parts and put some Rust-Oleum paint on it. Got all the cast iron top parts waiting on the saw horses for me tomorrow (they will haunt me with all of their curves to clean). Figured out I could get the metal tags off the pieces with a little work so I didn’t have to tape them all off. I just have a sticker left on it that I dare not remove that is a list of patents that I think is pretty cool so I...

Arts & Crafts Dining Room Set #3: Rationalized Need

1401 days ago by CaptainSkully | 0 comments »

After working in the Valley for a couple of weeks, I decided to spend some of my harder than I thought earned money to get a mortising machine. I settled on the DELTA 14-651 because of its Amazon reviews and price point ($289). I would’ve loved to get the Powermatic, but that would’ve taken another year to justify ($480). I rationalized that with all of the mortises that I’ll need for the dining room table, that this additional expense will pay itself off on this on...

Workbench #9: Roubo needs some legs

810 days ago by HungryTermite | 2 comments »

Today was a fun day! 1st up today was to put the holdfast holes in the legs. This started on the back side of the legs buy counterboring a 1-3/8 hole using a forstner bit. The depth of the counterbore is 1-1/2 inches and this leaves 3-1/2 inches of leg left for the holdfast to grab on to. The Grammercy holdfasts I have supposedly do not work well in pieces thicker than 4 inches. One of the holes lined up with a large knot that was filled with epoxy. You can see here just how far down ...

Delta Unisaw #1: Cleaned up and trying to decide if I should keep it.

1944 days ago by Kevin | 15 comments »

I have decided to put all of this into a blog instead of the forums. Here is a link to the previous forums. Should I buy this Unisaw? http://lumberjocks.com/topics/1877 Unisaw Advice Needed? http://lumberjocks.com/topics/1989 Well, I finally got pictures of it. I wish I had pictures from before working on it. I have spent a lot of time trying to clean up the cast iron top. I tried to get pictures that show what it looks like, but it is hard to capture. I picked up a new tape for the ...

Fence upgrades #1: Installing my new Delta T2-30 on a Craftsman flexdrive.

1403 days ago by JoshO | 2 comments »

It all started with dissatisfaction with my Craftsman Flexdrive table saw. It was difficult to make a decent cut with the saw. I understood part of the problem could have been lack of experience on how to use the tool, but it wasn’t exactly a complicate piece of equipment and degree in rocket science wasn’t necessary. After doing some research, I came across an interesting post that taught me that a table saw is nothing more than table with blade mounted underneath it. All the mag...
