I had a nice weekend. Saturday I worked with a local cabinet maker helping him catch up on his schedule. We are nearly finished with the 3rd kitchen cabinet job, and then he will be caught up. I think I have worked about 8-9 days this summer with him on Saturdays.
Sunday was relaxing, went to church and then home with the family, and a nap. A nap makes a lot of things better for some reason (not to take anything away from church).

Today, Monday, I took photos of what I have accomplished on my Hymn Number Board that I am building for the St. Anthony Church in Strong City, KS.
On one hand, it seems like I made a lot of progress since my last blog late last week, but when I look back over the photos tonight, I can see that the number of hours it takes me to do this tedious work is mounting.

I have received some correspondence lately asking about what I am doing right now in the shop. So, I thought I would post a little progress on my current commission piece.
The people at the St. Anthony of Padua Church in Strong City, KS asked me to build a Hymn Number Stand to match the other pieces in the church I did earlier this year.

Just a quick note to show a photo of an important new addition to the shop. Last Fall a neighbor said that they had a large window air conditioner that I could have if I wanted it.
I waited all Fall, Winter, Spring, and half of the Summer, but did get the big unit installed this week. We have had a very mild Summer here in Kansas, with lots of rain, cloudy days, and cooler weather than normal. So, why rush into installing the window a/c unit?

The other day I posted a couple of projects where I used some reddish-white wood, that we around here call “Cedar.” I don’t know what the species name is, some say Western Red, some Say Eastern Red, so I don’t know for sure.

Wow, I’m not sure that I’ve ever been so tired after a two week vacation before. In fact, I know not.
In years past, I spent my vacation time aimlessly, without purpose, doing things like laying on a hot windy beach, skiing in blizzard conditions, looking at smelly animals in a zoo, getting drenched at a water park by rain, wringing seawater out of my souvenior t-shirt at Sea World, getting so sunburned while snokeling that I couldn’t sit for a week, standing in long lin...

After reading Martin’s blog yesterday about all of us having some lumberjock club meetings, I did one of those head slap moments and thought out loud, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

The hardest dust for me to breathe is the fine stuff that comes out of the orbital sander. I have used the Porter Cable Model 333 for about 10 years now, and have done a lot of sanding with it. I am sure there are better, more expensive sanders, but I like it, at least so far.

After a set of long days and late nights, I had the joy of taking the Mission Style Casket to meet the family today. We headed toward each other and met in Great Bend, KS and had lunch and transfered the casket from my little Ranger pickup truck into a covered trailer. After that we shared a lunch at Braum’s, a hamburger and ice cream resteraunt.
I worked late last night and finished up the casket, and installed the liner. Here are some photos showing the final completed look.
