A Scrimshaw Art Journey: A Lumberjock’s “Short Version” of the Techniques for Decorating a Powder Horn

(This writing, photos, and artwork are protected by copyright by M.A. DeCou 11-11-2007, all rights reserved, please ask permission before using any part or component.)
Commerical Note: I get quite a few emails about how to buy my scrimshaw work. Most of my scrimshaw art and powder horns are done on commission, and take several...

Many folks over the past year have emailed me asking about whether investing in a website was worth the money and time. In my opinion (likely to change any day) for many folks that are just wanting to share their artwork with the world, I think a community posting like Lumberjocks is a better effort of your time spent.
If you want to sell your work, or do it full time, then how you use the internet needs to be part of a bigger plan. Almost all “artist-based” websites I have r...

I had decided to spend the month of November not posting to lumberjocks, so that I could get some work done in the shop. But, I was given some good news today, and given the link to the photos I will show below, so I decided to “speak” again.
So, for the good news: the St. Anthony Church is ready for me to design and quote a Baptismal Font to match the other furniture in the church. So, I will be brainstorming some ideas and developing a quote. I was told that this project would be comi...

I’ve had a fun week. I’m building a chair to match the Tilt Front Desk that I previously posted, and blogged about. If you want to read about the desk, the posting link is given at the bottom of this blog.
The desk chair is designed to fit the customer’s kitchen, as the desk is being placed in the kitchen area. She loves to cook, and hopes to move her laptop computer station to the kitchen where she can capture her thoughts on her cooking blog, and do more writing.
...

Over the past few years, I have had the chance to build my own door handles out of copper for several commissioned art-furniture pieces. This is something I enjoy doing, and it gives my work another niche to offer.
I would not say that I am a coppersmith, as there is a lot that I don’t know about the process. I am almost completely self-taught, so there is bound to be a lot I haven’t learned yet. I bought two old reprinted books on the subject of coppersmithing, and I think ...

I’m in the midst of finishing up a project I have really enjoyed. Sure, it has taken me two times the hours I bid, but I am happy with the result. Actually, it has come out better than I expected, which is always a nice surprise.
This is a functional-art piece I wish I wasn’t selling, to be honest. But, I have already spent all of the down payment. So, giving the money back is not possible, so the customer will get her desk.
There have been a few pieces I wish I could ha...

I hesitate to do this, that which I am about to do. I don’t fancy myself as a good carver, or a great picture drawer. Especially with so many lumberjocks that are great carvers here that will see this. On top of that, there are so many great carvers on the internet that will stumble onto this blog because they surf the net.
With that said, after Mark Mazzo asked about the process I go through to do a carved panel like this one, I thought about it for awhile, and decided to show th...

This week I came up with this axle and wheels from an old antique wagon. I have another set of wheels I found previously, but they don’t match this new set.
I am just scratching my head about what to do with them. I know they are good for something, and something really cool, I just don’t know what yet.
Last Spring, I was trying to figure out how to do a backdrop set for a Cowboy VBS program, and the jocks sure came to my aide.
So, I thought, “why not ask the lumb...

Several have asked about what I am working on now, so I thought I would take a minute and post some progress photos.
My current work is a Kitchen Shelving and Desk system in Birch to match the styling of the exisiting cabinets built in the early 1960’s. Seemed like a fairly straight forward project for a past customer, and I like working for them. They “discovered” me, and that “Rates” in my book, regardless of what they want me to do.
During the planning...
