Last year I had the opportunity to drive from Missouri to California to visit my 92 year old Grandmother. It’s always great to see her and visit the house that she and my Grandfather lived in my whole life. About 15 years ago my Grandfather passed away, and left behind a collection of unique tools in his garage that he had amassed over his lifetime. It was on this visit, last year, that I found an old saw hanging in a locker in the garage. I had no knowledge of hand saws at the time, bu...
After reading many threads and blogs about saw restoration I got to wondering what one of these things cost. Then I stumbled on a Disston 4b at the back a storage shed in a box marked with the name of a very old storage customer on it. We own a boat storage business and when people leave they tend to leave a lot of stuff. We pack it up and put it away in case someone remembers they left something. This box had been put away many years ago by my father-in-law and obviously forgotten. ...
Last month I was chatting with a guy who ran a used tool shop near me and the conversation drifted to talking about planes. He lamented the fact that he had trouble selling the planes he purchased and I gave him a quick lesson on how to figure the value of an average plane and separate the good ones from the junk. In exchange for my lesson he told me about a guy who was selling his collection of tools up the street. This is what I came home with for about 280. Stanley No 2, No 5 SW, No 23,...
Just wanted to post a quick video to show a Disston D8 that I sharpened today as a 7ppi rip saw with 5 degrees of rake. I’ve also included the Disston D8 from my last post which was filed 8ppi crosscut with 12 degrees of rake and 20 degrees of fleam.
I picked up two Disston D-8 handsaws with thumbhole at an auction today. $27.50 for about 12 saws. Two which were these Disston and one smaller one had a Warranted Superior button (not pictured). I took these three saws, filtered through the rest and a lady (the one who bid me up) bought the rest of them from me for $3 (I didn’t want the rest of the garbage). They are pretty rough shape. The one with the painted handle has a decent etching under the rust yet. From the website http://www...
I managed to grab a few hours when it wasn’t raining and decided to sharpen Big Joe, the first of my crosscut backsaws. I got ¾ of the way through filing in new teeth and my file gave out. I’ve ordered some more files which should be here early next week, so I’ll return to Big Joe in a future post. I didn’t want to waste the day however, so I decided to sharpen a handsaw instead – a first for me. Some months ago, I restored a couple of 26” Disston D8s. This one is 8PPI (points per in...
I was out strolling the yard sales looking for an old Stanley handplane to restore but instead I came across two old Disston handsaws for $10 each. I personally don’t have many antique tools but have been thinking about starting a little collection lately so I picked them both up and took them home. When I got home I went on to the disstonian institutes website and found the saws I had just purchased. The first saw is a D8 that I dated between 1896-1917. It has the handle with the th...
