Lattice Cutting board Help

485 days ago by Tony | 13 comments »

After several e-mails requesting the plans for the Dan Walters cutting board I copied I decided to put some information together to get people started. The first thing to decide is what size of board you want as this will dictate the stock you need. Or the stock you have will dictate what size cutting board you can make. Stock selection: you need to have a good contrast between the different woods used. The wood selected should also be hard woods, but not necessarily too hard. OAK, ...

167 days ago by Davidramsey03 | 9 comments »

BEFORE I START, IF YOU READ THIS, AND CAN OFFER ADVICE, I’D LOVE TO HEAR IT. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!! Ok, after collecting information from a couple key people, and looking carefully at my pieces, I’ve moved on to Sample #2. First things first. NEW CLAMPS!!!!! Not the best, but all I could get for now. On to business. More blanks, 10 this time. For these, I used a sanding block and norton 3x sandpaper. This was slow, but quiet as it was about 9:00PM when I started, and I’...

Cutting Board Learning #1: First Steps

168 days ago by Davidramsey03 | 5 comments »

BEFORE I START, IF YOU READ THIS, AND CAN OFFER ADVICE ON IMPROVING THIS WITHOUT BUYING ANYTHING OVER $25, I’D LOVE TO HEAR YOUR ADVICE. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!! I bought some clearance pen blanks from Rockler (Pau Ferro, Indian Rosewood, and Cherry, I think). Not having any “larger” tools or super-fine precision tools (band saw, table saw, router table, etc.) I decided I would begin the adventure the “backwoods” way. I Started by laying them together, checki...

My woodworing ideas and tips #6: Marking and cutting

186 days ago by Betsy | 15 comments »

OK – this is probably going to be very simplistic at best for most, if not all, of you. But I’m really trying to keep my head in the woodworking game. I’m thankful for the support my fellow LJ’s have been giving me by reading and responding to my blogs. So onto today’s “tip.” As we all know making/marking a line to use as a guide to cut your board to final length is quite important. If you don’t mark the piece, you have no idea or are just...

Projects in Process #1: Barbeque Tray

440 days ago by DannyBoy | 1 comment »

This is a plan that I found early on in the year and is really what has finally pushed me into doing something with the dusty old tools that I have setting around. I found it by chance on a website and promptly printed a copy of the plans. I’m not too up on copyrights and such, but if you google it as 19830EZ you should be able to find it as a PDF file. Quick back-step: My wife and I are of the belief that there are far too many gifts that are given out impersonally that fall apar...

My Math teacher might be proud of this

With the aid of my motorized router lift, I can create medium to large circles on the router table easily. Forget that router trammel or bandsaw circle jig, with this method, you can make circles on your router table with no dust and no fuss. This method is safer, cleaner and more accurate than many other methods. If you have a router table with a miter slot, check out this setup! The scale is based on the pythagoream thoreom. THe hypotenuse of a right triangle is changed to alter ...

Thoughts on the Hollow Chisel Mortising Machine (updated 11-14-2007)

678 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 18 comments »

In a recent Blog by Obi, he discussed using a router to cut mortises, and this started up a discussion, in which Don cautioned against getting a Hollow Chisel Mortiser. I think there are good thoughts on both sides of this debate, and I don’t mean to do anything other than offer some more experience about purchasing and using a Mortiser, and other methods of cutting mortises. As in anything, the more money you spend, the better tool you get. If I were buying just what I wanted, not what ...
