I have always cut my green logs either on the ground or on top of other logs. Well a few weeks ago I was cutting a log and it decided it wanted to dance a little bit. Now I don’t care if a log dances or not I just don’t want it to move while I have a moving 20” chainsaw in it.
This got me thinking there has to be a way to hold the work safely for cutting. So I took to the internet looking for sawhorses for chainsaws. I did find a few commercial units but they were all listed in E...

While looking through old Flickr sets, I realized I never made public one in which I slabbed one of the huge Eucalyptus logs I wrestled home from a craigslist ad. The largest of them is over 230lbs. I chose the smallest – probably around 80-100lbs, because I was desperate to see what lurked inside. I have at least a dozen of these things, so I could sacrifice one enormous beast to curiosity, though that said, I did immediately seal up the ends with a few inches worth of Anchorseal, and ...

I recently remembered that my Canon PowerShot SD500 IS Digital Elph Longest Name For A Camera Ever has a time-lapse mode. You can set it to capture a frame every 1 or 2 seconds. I’ve been pointing it at my work areas lately with the latter (less frequent) capture setting, and just letting it run for an hour or two. It’s fun to watch later, though it pains me to know that no matter how hard I try, I’ll never accomplish anything at this speed.
This is me doing some of the w...

Wow, it’s been a busy month. These are from a month and 2 days ago. My landlady stopped by to check things out, and decided the Hollywood Junipers (Juniperus chinensis) needed trimming. Here’s how they looked, during a day when I was drying out my tarp, and realizing it was the same size as my tiny back yard:
That was 3 months before they were trimmed. They had grown in a lot more in that time. I had cut down a limb last year so I’d have room for a wood storage shed, ...

It’s a bit labor intensive getting all the bark and Eucalyptus Longhorned Borer bug excretion cleaned off the Eucalyptus tree I cut up into logs from a nearby neighborhood. It dawned on me a couple weeks ago that I could use a wire wheel brush in my drill press. I’ve used the technique to brush up aluminum ...

BEFORE I START, IF YOU READ THIS, AND CAN OFFER ADVICE, I’D LOVE TO HEAR IT. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!
Ok, after collecting information from a couple key people, and looking carefully at my pieces, I’ve moved on to Sample #2.
First things first. NEW CLAMPS!!!!! Not the best, but all I could get for now.
On to business. More blanks, 10 this time.
For these, I used a sanding block and norton 3x sandpaper. This was slow, but quiet as it was about 9:00PM when I started, and I’...

BEFORE I START, IF YOU READ THIS, AND CAN OFFER ADVICE ON IMPROVING THIS WITHOUT BUYING ANYTHING OVER $25, I’D LOVE TO HEAR YOUR ADVICE. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!
I bought some clearance pen blanks from Rockler (Pau Ferro, Indian Rosewood, and Cherry, I think). Not having any “larger” tools or super-fine precision tools (band saw, table saw, router table, etc.) I decided I would begin the adventure the “backwoods” way.
I Started by laying them together, checki...

OK – this is probably going to be very simplistic at best for most, if not all, of you. But I’m really trying to keep my head in the woodworking game.
I’m thankful for the support my fellow LJ’s have been giving me by reading and responding to my blogs.
So onto today’s “tip.” As we all know making/marking a line to use as a guide to cut your board to final length is quite important. If you don’t mark the piece, you have no idea or are just...

I found this study while doing a little research for another blog site and thought it of some importance in this community. Wood Cutting Boards are actually safer than Plastic!

This is a plan that I found early on in the year and is really what has finally pushed me into doing something with the dusty old tools that I have setting around. I found it by chance on a website and promptly printed a copy of the plans. I’m not too up on copyrights and such, but if you google it as 19830EZ you should be able to find it as a PDF file.
Quick back-step: My wife and I are of the belief that there are far too many gifts that are given out impersonally that fall apar...
