Most important: Thank you to the helpful woodworkers who were kind enough to guide me on this endeavor. You are the ones who gave me the courage to attempt this. I received the order of the bearings last Monday afternoon and proceeded to get them installed without any major problems. I made several jigs to hold things in place while I pressed and pounded the bearings onto the shaft. Here are the bearing pads I first used. I made them to fit on either side and hold the shaft at the ex...
PTL! The bearing is finally off! I eventually came to the realization that I should remove the motor to make the remaining parts easier to maneuver. I removed all the bearing beads with no difficulty since the raceway was broken and I had already removed it. To try to keep the shaft centered so that there would be minimal torque on the opposite bearing, I wedged in a small piece of wood. On the underside of the cast housing, there is an indention (that was, no doubt, the only w...
Planer cutterhead bearing replacement #1: HELP! Can anyone give me advice on replacing bearings on my planer cutterhead?
Last week my planer blew a bearing on the cutterhead. It is a NuMark 12” planer, more than 30 years old. The company went out of business many years ago. I cannot determine how to remove the cutterhead. Here’s the issue:1. The cutterhead casting is a single unit. 2. The bearings on either end are smaller than the cutterhead circumference so the cutterhead cannot be pulled out either end. .3. From the parts schematic, the cutterhead appears to be one piece (no smaller diameter inside sh...
I installed the Shelix cutterhead from Holbren in my Dewalt 735. Although Holbren has online instructions, I found Chris Wong’s video, of Flair Woodworks, to be more detailed. The process was surprisingly simple, and went together without a hitch. I won’t recount the entire installation process, because it is well covered elsewhere, however I will add a couple tips if you are considering this upgrade. When you pull the gearbox off to access the cutterhead, use a bungee cor...
Well, it’s installed in the planer. Watch the videos below to see how things turned out. I still haven’t finished editing the machining video, but I’ll get to it. See my first Topic SHELIX CUTTERHEADand Part I and Part II of this blog entry Here I begin inserting the teeth.......and here I finish. I didn’t want to bore you with watching me insert every tooth....Here is the first time I actually power up the planer. Pretty intimidating, if you ask me. I was r...
IT’S DONE!!!!!!!! I am editing the final video of the machining process…. I have completed final stages of machining a custom helical cutterhead for my DeWalt 733 Planer. The design is what I came up with from looking at other companies’ designs. BIG THANKS TO BYRD TOOL AND HERMANCE TOOL for the inspiration and great ideas. THANKS ALSO TO Dave at www.conicaltool.com for the custom tapered end mills used to machine the pockets for the carbide teeth, and for having the te...
I have completed preliminary stages of machining a custom helical cutterhead for my DeWalt 733 Planer. The design is what I came up with from looking at other companies’ designs. This is what I created in my CAD software. Here is a video of the machining process to this point… DON’T WORRY, THERE’S MORE TO COME! This video is over 16 Minutes, but I think you’ll enjoy it.
