Video: How To Hand Cut Precision Dovetails: The Pins

2096 days ago by Keith Cruickshank | 4 comments »

Many of you probably cut dovetails with power tools & jigs —and so do I. But for some projects, I really prefer cutting them by hand and I never tire of learning how to do it better. That’s what took me on one of my recent video “treks” (journeys), where I filmed the segment I’ve posted here — this time to the shop of master cabinetmaker Craig Vandall Stevens. In this two-part series, Craig (who studied under James Krenov) uses only a saw, chisel, and several sh...

Work(shop) in Progress #16: Incra 998SE Miter Gauge

2151 days ago by PurpLev | 11 comments »

So I am building a box frame using box-joints. I have my Incra 1000SE miter gauge setup with the stop block to cut the side pieces to length, and I’m all done with that. Time to cut the box joints. So I swap the blade on the table saw with my new (only used once before) Dado blade, I attach my homemade high fence for making box joints onto the Incra 1000 fence, and I’m ready to start cutting. If you’ve followed the details up to this point – you might have ...

my intro to wood working #6: life's little hazards

2198 days ago by romansfivefive | 5 comments »

I cut myself in the shop for the fist time the other day. Since starting my work with wood, I have had nicks and scrapes before ( one time I nicked my thumb without realizing it and spent the next 5 minutes trying to figure out how the red paint was getting on the truck I was making. The more I turned the truck over, the more paint seemed to be miraculously appear randomly on the wood felt really dumb when I realized it was my blood) but nothing needing a bandaid until the other day. I use h...

Operation Holtzapffel #5: Yup, that's sharp...

So I got my jointer blades back from the sharpener, Standard Saw Works, and they did a great job. It’s a cool store too and one of the storefront window displays is full of old wooden planes (I didn’t get a pic) Once I got the blades back to the workshop I set about reinstalling them. My usual method is to use my dial indicator and twiddle with them for hours on end getting them just right but this time I tried a new approach which worked really well. After I’d dropped...

Christmas Projects #1: Started my Christmas projects.

2423 days ago by Sgt_Lobo | 1 comment »

Well, as I said in last night’s blog, today I started 3 projects that I need to finish in time to send off before Christmas. So I guess my insomnia paid off though because I was able to draw up my plans, measure and mark all my wood last night which made cutting today go allot quicker. So, today between baking pies and pumpkin bread, I managed to cut all my pieces to length, rip them to width, and miter the ends. Not bad for a days work. Heres some pics/teasers… 1st pic...

Bandsaw's bite

2529 days ago by DataDoc | 22 comments »

No matter how careful you think you are, when you feel the thunk of the blade as it catches on the bone means it’s too late. I reached to brush away a cutoff and got my thumb snagged in the blade. With my wife’s assistance I got it bandaged up, and then sat around all afternoon holding my hand up to relieve the pounding in my thumb. Three Ibuprofen and 30 minutes later I had relief. Now all I feel is stupid.

"A Brush Stroke of Illusion" --by RusticWoodArt

A Brush Stroke of Illusion ....at end of day, when all my world has had it’s say, and now i am giving these places in my heart, a time to settle down for a good nights rest…. —-comes the longing crisp of a brushes breath, and so i give the right to let the colors fly, while painting this wood with sealing stealth, where once again i impart a stop gap by and by…. —-wondering now i watch the dance, as brush gives color streams of pigment gloss, while who ca...
