No matter how careful you think you are, when you feel the thunk of the blade as it catches on the bone means it’s too late. I reached to brush away a cutoff and got my thumb snagged in the blade. With my wife’s assistance I got it bandaged up, and then sat around all afternoon holding my hand up to relieve the pounding in my thumb. Three Ibuprofen and 30 minutes later I had relief.
Now all I feel is stupid.

I finally got a chance to practice hand-cutting dovetails. This is the first time I’ve made a cut with my new Japanese dovetail saw and use my new bench too.
I started out with a couple scrap pieces of pine:
I drew the tails:
First cut… didn’t follow the line so well. It will take some getting used to.
Here are all the cuts. Some are pretty good and some are pretty far off the line.
This photo is AWESOME. Because as you can see, I did a beautif...

Disclaimer: This blog follows my Magen David Board that is already finished and posted here
In Highschool I always doodled (I still am). and one of my favorite things was to use the squares on the math papers to form different geometries – mostly with triangles. as I was playing along, I discovered that I could form a star of david (Magen David) and that formation has stuck with me ever since.
When I was introduced to the idea of making cutting boards out of wood, I always wanted ...

It’s snowing here so Its out of the unheated shop and staying indoors – good time to make the blade clips.
I chose to use stainless steel because I waned a material that won’t rust, be strong and capable of sustaining the blade tension, and I like the color (not a big fan of brass although I do like it as an accent in some cases). I ordered some 1/2” stainless steel rods from Speedymetals a while back for no real reason when I ordered some other material as it was o...

Its been a while since the previous post mostly because I wasn’t sure I was happy with the original design.
I went to the local lumber supplier that carries mahogany plywood and bought the 3/4” material for the carcass and baking. While there I had them cut the 1/2 full sheet to 2 halves (2 quarter sheets) so it’ll be easier for me to transport with my car (don’t have a large truck anymore).
With the 2 pieces now sitting in the garage, the original design seemed ...

So I am building a box frame using box-joints.
I have my Incra 1000SE miter gauge setup with the stop block to cut the side pieces to length, and I’m all done with that.
Time to cut the box joints.
So I swap the blade on the table saw with my new (only used once before) Dado blade, I attach my homemade high fence for making box joints onto the Incra 1000 fence, and I’m ready to start cutting.
If you’ve followed the details up to this point – you might have ...

I was able to get to the garage today as a request for a new shelf for the kitchen was in. While there I saw some cutoff pieces of mahogany that I had piled up from the past 2 projects, and saw 4 legs hidden in those waiting to come out to life.
I had wanted to put legs on this box from the get go but wasn’t set on a design that I liked and was mentally blocked with it.
I decided to make 3 1.5” x 1.5” x 1” legs and just chamfer the bottoms – just to have so...

So I got my jointer blades back from the sharpener, Standard Saw Works, and they did a great job. It’s a cool store too and one of the storefront window displays is full of old wooden planes (I didn’t get a pic)
Once I got the blades back to the workshop I set about reinstalling them. My usual method is to use my dial indicator and twiddle with them for hours on end getting them just right but this time I tried a new approach which worked really well.
After I’d dropped...

I just posted this as a comment/response on another thread but figured this might be something that others could find useful. so here goes.
This short tutorial shows one way to create a compound angle cut on an edge of a 2×4. this can translate to any other situation where a compound angle is needed:
I started with a 2×4, used the protractor tool, and made a guideline from one corner at a 10 degree angle:
I then selected the opposite EDGE of the ‘board’ and usi...

My mom is doing some amazing bead work. one time when I went with her to the beads store, I saw a small box/cabinet that the store used to store (no pun intended) the beads in, and thought it would make for a great way for my my to have all her beads organized – and I can make it.
After completing my handtool box (at least the general construction of if) it made me think that I can scale it down and use the same ‘general design idea’ for the beads box. plus some additions...
