Gang,
A while ago I posted this blog entry (http://lumberjocks.com/thiel/blog/14521) about how I needed to replace the worm drive in my Triton table router since it had stripped. Triton (having been purchased by HTC tools) sent me out the new part with no questions asked, and I’d found an excellent description of the replacement process online.
At the time, a couple of us noted that a nylon part for a worm gear seemed like a bad idea… and no surprise when six months later...

Shopping experiences at big box stores are not always bad. Below is the text of a letter I am sending to John Menard:
Dear Mr. Menard:
I am writing about the extraordinary customer service experience I had recently at the Menards store in Onalaska, Wisconsin.
I am an amateur woodworker, and my shop is also my garage. Over the last several years, I have been using a particular model of a Shop Vac (Hang-Up) to suck up the water and gunk that melts off my car in the winter time. The sal...

I was just thinking that it’s pretty easy to slam a company when they screw up, but when they get it right it often goes unmentioned. Woodcraft, here’s to you. In case you don’t get to the end of this post, the moral of the story is that Woodcraft (online, not local) totally came through for me.
I’ve ordered a few things from Woodcraft, and never had a problem. There aren’t any woodworking stores within two hours of where I live (unless you count the BORG...

Wanna’ hear my sob story?
Went to tune up my new Grizzly G0555X 14” bandsaw tonight.
The tension knob wouldn’t turn. It would go about ten degrees in either direction, but then … hard stop.
No adjustment possible without proper tension.
Rat farts.
First call to Grizzly. Rep basically says that I’ve got a big problem, and should take the thing apart.
So … being an idiot … I started to.
Then … being less of an idiot, I calle...

Well——- as you know I’ve been collecting my toolbox full of hand tools. I recently bought a low angle block plane from Lee Valley. It’s a good plane. The one I received however had a small problem. I could not keep the brass toe knob tight and after several strokes the mouth opening would change. Aggravating for sure. So after deciding I needed a solution I e-mailed LV customer service. We’ve gone back and forth with e-mails, me explaining the problem, them askin...

I recently purchased a 16” jointer planer combo and 18” 3000 Series Bandsaw from Laguna Tools. It has turned into my worst nightmare. I have spent $6,245.83 on this order. It arrived damaged and I properly noted it on the freight bill. I contacted laguna about the most obvious damage to the band saw. The upper flywheel had come apart in shipping. I rebuilt it and it seems to work fine now.
My nightmare starts really with the jointer. In short this machine should edge join using...

Yes it’s cheap, and most of the time it will warp as soon as it is removed from the stack, but it can also be dangerous. Acording to an employee at Owl Hardwood in Lombard, IL, there is an instance where metal was found between the plys. The consumer that bought it found what appeared to be a utility knife blade while he was ripping the sheet on a table saw and in doing so, destroyed his blade. No coments if the person was injured, but I would not want to be around when pieces of ca...

Consumerist.com article about my recent experience with HomeDepot
Below is the letter I sent to HomeDepot’s CEO. I wasn’t expecting much out of them but instead they just gave me the tool I tried to order. I even offered to pay for it but they wouldn’t take my money.
Good afternoon Mr. Blake,
Earlier this week I ordered a Work Sharp 3000 from HomeDepot.com (order number W118122508) after finding out that that the tool was on sale. The website indicated that this too...
