Sketchup Shorts #3: Going to the Lumberyard - Virtually

263 days ago by PurpLev | 17 comments »

so you wanted to use specific materials in your Sketchup project? exotic/local lumber? metals? leather? other? I saw this subject raised in one of DaveR’s latest blogs, and it’s a fairly simple thing to do in Sketchup. You can use any material you so desire in sketchup, but first, we need to ‘make’ that material. Creating new Materials in Sketchup (Using live materials as source) 1. get your material ‘source’ – this can be any photo – e...

Designing a Prototype Wooden Curling Iron for custom Hatmakers to curl up the edge of Hat Brims

528 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 3 comments »

”Wood meets Felt” aka “Woodworker Meets Hatmakers” I’ve been trying to fit into my spare time the tedious work of making of several different hatmaking tool prototypes. Each of them has come along as a result of a custom hatmaker asking for one, and so I have met some cool folks that are passionately working at something they love doing. Hopefully, all of us will get tired of ball caps at some point and look for a style that is better looking, and actually...

It's alive!

602 days ago by Tom Adamski | 19 comments »

Well, after a little bit of tweeking, It looks to be working… (keeping my fingers crossed). This was just to be a proof of concept (prototype), but it seems to be working well enough that I’ll use it for the rest of the production and make a better one next time. Thanks to all for your suggestions. !(Working router trammel)! Sincerely, Tom

back to the box #5: my trip on the waterslide

954 days ago by scottb | 13 comments »

Finally got to the point where I could try the waterslide transfer decals out. David’s instructions were much clearer than what came with the product. Having already used a different first coat, than in his demo (oops), and not being sure of compatability issues (not to mention wanting to wait for a few coats of spray finish to dry) I tried using them unprotected (as per the manufacturers instructions). They worked great – slid off perfectly. I didn’t find them too ...

Large scale moulding on the cheap...

603 days ago by Tom Adamski | 13 comments »

In an attempt to cut a large radius nosing for some mantels I’m making, I’m in process of making a router trammel to support the bit in a constant arc. Made from 3/4 ply, my inspiration is based off an old Fine Woodworking article and tablesaw trunions. I still need to mount it to a stable base, fit a router and bit and the fire it up… I’ll post more when I make some sawdust. Tom

Tonight, I Finished My Second Custom Steak Knife Set. Is it the Last?

719 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 15 comments »

It’s been a long week, but I am excited to say that I just finished up the 2nd Steak Knife set tonight about 10:15pm CT. Sure, I could go to bed, but not after I blog the milestone. But, first, let me apologize for not providing much in the area of notable, or supportive input the past couple of months. I just haven’t had time to do any reading on LJ, only worrying about getting my own projects and blogs posted. I swore off of LJ until the steak knife commissions were complete,...
