My Tools #4: A new handle for my 3' crosscut saw

04-08-2010 05:31 PM by Gary Fixler | 8 comments »

When my chainsaw broke the other day, halfway through a log, I reached for a secret weapon I’ve not really brought out into the light in the exactly 6 months (as of today) since it arrived: my 36”, German, hand-hammered, regular-tooth, one-man crosscut saw from Traditional Woodworking. Here are pics from early October that I’ve had squirreled away. The saw was so much bigger than I’d even imagined, and I had imagined it even bigger than I would ever have imagined it to...

North Pole Needs Help This Year!

11-23-2009 05:38 PM by Chris Davis | 3 comments »

NORTH POLE – Due to the increasing population of the world and the “Cash for Toys Program”, it has been reported that Santa Claus (AKA Kris Kringle) cannot keep up with the many furniture wishes he has received this year. Santa tells reporters in his yearly press conference that, along with recovery effort, many other factors have contributed to the problem. The popularity of a baseball bed, murphy beds, and a Princess Castle Loft have made his schedule very demanding. ...

random #29: Brian May's guitar

11-13-2009 03:15 AM by Gary Fixler | 7 comments »

I just learned from a reddit post (I know some of you are also redditors) that Queen guitarist Brian May built his guitar, “Red Special” with his dad in 1963 when he was sixteen, mostly “from an 18th century fireplace mantel that a friend of the family was about to throw away.” He’s been using it on tour and in albums for over 3 decades. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Special The manufacturing subsection at the link is a fun read for woodworkers and guita...

Sketchup Shorts #3: Going to the Lumberyard - Virtually

03-09-2009 10:47 PM by PurpLev | 8 comments »

so you wanted to use specific materials in your Sketchup project? exotic/local lumber? metals? leather? other? I saw this subject raised in one of DaveR’s latest blogs, and it’s a fairly simple thing to do in Sketchup. You can use any material you so desire in sketchup, but first, we need to ‘make’ that material. Creating new Materials in Sketchup (Using live materials as source) 1. get your material ‘source’ – this can be any photo – e...

cabinetry #1: Custom table for boutique women's clothing store

02-18-2009 06:17 AM by JMB | 2 comments »

This is a quick commission I landed last week. The gal asked me to finish it asap so she can open up her new store. Cabinetry is one of those wonderful things which is really easy to do when you’re properly setup, and make a lot of money doing it. I’m not gouging her, but I’m definitely making my minimum hourly on this project. The design is simple enough. Divided storage areas for a reciept printer, wrapping paper, shopping bags, etc. The larger of the two lower left cub...

A Bit of Rambling about a Beautiful Sunny Day, and Being Bummed Out about A Stolen Knife

09-09-2008 08:15 PM by Mark A. DeCou | 12 comments »

I awoke this morning to a dreary, cold, very foggy day. I don’t mind fog, my morning commute to work is only about 40 feet behind the house, and a little fog doesn’t slow me down much walking out there. Actually, it is mornings like this that I’m reminded how much I have to be thankful for. Back in the days when I had to commute by car 87 miles to Wichita, a foggy morning like this one was a real burden, even treacherous. I always write on the calendar when we have ...
