Hi there welcome back for another installment of the chess corner. Today’s topic is turning bishops for a chess set. Well, just some text at this point – but I can’t slow my heart rate down at the thought of what’s happening next door. A major maple – which looks like it may have some serious figure – is coming down. I’ve been offered the bole (the main trunk from the base to the crotch), which is about 10-12 feet long, and a couple sections of major limbs from the crotch up a ways. The arborist says he’ll need to cut the bole in two…I’d like it left ...

When using some veneers, they must be flattened prior to use. This is especially true of burls, crotch and stump veneers.
Flattening them really isn’t a big problem, it just takes a little time, and a flattening agent.
The main steps are to spray the front and backs of the veneers. Once the are sprayed, they are placed between plattens and some sort of absorbent paper. Some people use newspaper, but I ‘m always concerned about print showing up on my veneer.

Veneering, a Primer Course

After mulling around a bit thinking about the music box I want to build and cursing the lack of tools in my shop (specifically the Rikon 10-325 I not so secretly lust after) I was remembered a post I read and was inspired,

I’m posting these pictures as a means to get bloggin’…and, because I’m interested in milling and drying lumber (on a scale that I can accommodate – in the backyard). I’m also brand new at it, so it’s just fun to share! I would have liked to have photos or video of this ‘small time’ sawing in the backyard, but wasn’t quite there yet!
