Grand Daughters Crib #6: Making the crest rails/Starting assembly

405 days ago by Les Hastings | 15 comments »

The crest rails are made up of three pieces. One piece is about half of the rail. Another piece of about a quarter of the rail is milled and glued to the half piece. A filler piece is then glued into the open quarter section with craft paper between the pieces. this so it will come out after the piece is turned on the lathe to size. Below is the turned pieces ready for the next step. Now the the sections that were glued in with the craft paper are removed for the next step. Once...

397 days ago by Les Hastings | 11 comments »

I’ve been debating for a while now,,,,,what kind of feet should this crib have? I’m running our of time so something simple, yet goes with the rest of the design. Needs to be fast to make, since time is running out. Ah Ha! I have it! Here’s Grandpa back in the shop hard at work at the lathe….... The feet have been started (one extra for a sample) But they look like just a plain ole ball Grandpa! Yes they are just a plain ole ball,,,,,,but I’m not ...

A crib finish

143 days ago by Huckleberry | 13 comments »

I know that I have been away for a time and fortunately it was for a good reason and that is business is good in this down time. I consider myself fortunate that I am in this position and in need of your guys experience. I am making a crib for a client and they want a “safe” finish on the crib for obvious reasons. I am also making a changing table which I will finish in lacquer. I want to be close in the sheen on both pieces and given the time I have left before I need get t...

A Crib for Nathan #2: Finally Complete

283 days ago by Patrick Jaromin | 6 comments »

It’s been difficult finding time to complete this project. When you come home after work to two toddlers, a baby and an exhausted wife, it’s extremely difficult to then suggest you’d like to head out to the shop for a couple hours! “Disappearing” into the shop on weekends can be equally problematic. Nevertheless, we worked out a plan and I finally managed to make the time to get this crib done…and none to soon with Nathan now just over 3 mos. old! I d...

A Crib for Nathan #1: One Tough Customer

372 days ago by Patrick Jaromin | 5 comments »

Now that he’s arrived, I need to get crackin’ on a crib for our latest addition. As with the cribs I built for Annalise and Sean, I wanted to use an “off the shelf” plan to ensure it complies with the latest safety standards as well as to make it easier to fit it with standard hardware, mattress, etc. In the end, we settled on the “Heirloom Crib” design I had used for my daughter. This one will be built with cherry and walnut and sport some minor changes...

Grand Daughters Crib #9: Addison is here!! Working my tail oof to finish this crib!!

378 days ago by Les Hastings | 10 comments »

Addison rose was born Thurday the 6th of November at 2:19 am. Both are doing just fine. Addison weighed in at a whopping 7lbs. 15 oz. and stands 21” tall. I’m working hard to get this crib finished up and into finish. I think you guys are right, my timing is off a little or is it? This way I’ll have to go back down when the crib is done and I’ll get to see Addison again. Here’s a picture of Addison at about 12 hours old. Click on the picture to see it full v...

Baby Furniture #10: Final Pics

485 days ago by Kevin | 11 comments »

Well, we are basically finished. There are a couple spots that we still need to put some more Poly on, but the crib is basically finished. Enjoy. Well, that pretty much doesn’t for the crib. I had a lot of fun (and frustration) on this project and am looking forward to the next. There was a lot of lessons learned in this one that is for sure. This was, after all, my first piece of furniture since I was 11 years old. And much more challenging than that one ...

Baby Furniture #8: Inlay complete and most of the Poly is done

489 days ago by Kevin | 4 comments »

My Dad and Grandma came out this weekend. We spent most of the day Saturday looking at baby stuff. You know how Grandma’s eat that up. Consequently, we did not get the crib done this weekend. Oh well, we still had fun. The Inlay – my biggest fear. It wasn’t too bad and was completely horrible all at the same time. I “cheated” on my inlay. I was planning on using Mark’s method and do a lot of the cutting by hand. However, in the interest of time and for t...

Baby Furniture #7: New pieces cut for hardware

489 days ago by Kevin | 2 comments »

Since I changed my mind on the design and had to get new hardware, it only makes since that I would have to make some new pieces. I first tried sitting the plastic slide portion in the front legs and the pin in the gate. This did not work with my design. Two legs and two gate pieces no good. Then I decided to install the hardware as suggested and put the pins in the legs and the slides in the front gate. To do this, the front gate would have to be 1 1/4” thick. My is only 3/4”....
