Morris Chair Lalapalooza #3: The End Products...

The rest…I had cut the parts for the ottomans and glued up (after a dry fit) – I finished the glue up – Then everything into the fume tent. I put it all in with 33% ammonia for 24 hours at about 65 degrees. When they come out they are almost black, a deep shade of gray – After putting on a coat of Arm R Seal sealer, everything turned a rich Carmel color. The final result – one of two finished and one of five in process. I also built two tables that complimented the ...

Morris Chair Lalapalooza #2: Stiles, Back, Arms, Glue-up

778 days ago by schroeder | 8 comments »

Okay, at this point, legs are glued up, rails, stretchers are cut along with all the mortices and tenons. I decided to make two chairs and ottomans to completion and then come back to the other two. The next step is to cut the stiles and tenon their ends. I planned for 3/8” tenons and cut them at a horizontal router, (although a good backer board and dado setup works as well). The glue up of each side – the tenons fit tight, so I bevel the ends even before I dry f...

Morris Chair Lalapalooza #1: Morris Chair -

780 days ago by schroeder | 9 comments »

…So I decided to take the plunge and make something for sale…on spec…I like the Morris chairs so that’s what I went with. Always a timeless classic, clean lines, and fun to build! I brought forth the Visa and bought $3000 worth of white oak (this is my first venture into the “professional” arena). I planned on building 4 chairs and ottomans. I’m not going to quit my day job, but thought I’d give it whirl on the side…The first thing I can tell you is everything that everyone has been sayi...

Stickley "Done Darkly" #2: Down to finishing...

840 days ago by schroeder | 6 comments »

We have glued the breadboard, fitted it with Mountain Mahogany caps, and sanded…and sanded….and SANDED! (dark wood – lotsa sanding) This is with the third coat of sealer – now six coats of poly and we have to think about moving it (man its heavy!). Worth the effort thought to make such wild grain in the table. I’ll post once more when we have the final coat and put together in about ten days. Thanks!

Craftsman Bungalow Restoration #11: Dining in Style

883 days ago by gizmodyne | 6 comments »

Selling Point Besides our clawfoot tub, the only nice thing in the our house when we bought it was the dining room. A picture from our walkthrough. Fir wainscoting with a plate rail. We later found out that the wall paper is a custom reproduction of a Morris and Co. paper from the turn of the century. We have visited William Morris’ birth home and country farm in England last year. The wall paper hid most of the damage. The ceiling was cracked, peeling, and had an unfinished l...

Craftsman Bungalow Restoration #2: Gasp!

898 days ago by gizmodyne | 8 comments »

Year OneOn our first night of ownership we tore out the nasty smoke and urine stained carpet (aka: floor protectors). In the first month in our new house (March 2002) we added heat and quickly painted a bedroom. Life might have continued on with me painting everything white had I not gone to a fantastic home tour in our neighborhood We quickly bought every book we could find on bungalows and took our first visit to the Gamble House. That summer we taught summer school (booooo!) and w...

Craftsman - Stickley Projects #5: Three Steps Forward, At Least One Step Back

909 days ago by Paul | 3 comments »

I “completed” the carcases and installation of the drawer dividers on the “twins.” click for larger image Things were going so well, I guess I was feeling frisky and got ahead of myself. I installed the dividers before attaching the side drawer guides on the twin. But hey, I’m a pockethole “expert” now! So, I’ll just drill some pocketholes and attach the side drawer guides without taking the dividers back out. On number eight of 10 sid...

Craftsman - Stickley Projects #2: Dry Fit and Partial

915 days ago by Paul | 5 comments »

Whenever I draw up the plans myself instead of working from a published plan, I stop and dry fit often (probably too much) but I seem to catch errors in arithmetic and design faster this way. Here’s a couple of pics of the dry fit from yesterday. Click the thumbnail pics for a larger view. Here's the way it looks with the frame and panels for the sides glued up and the back dry fitted and clamped in place. Now, I'm pondering how I want to fix the draw dividers in...

Craftsman - Stickley Projects #1: Restart

915 days ago by Paul | 8 comments »

I guess it’s been so long since my last entry on this blog that I have to begin the series again. The New Blog entry page didn’t give me this title as a choice again. I was sidetracked with the Thorsen Table challenge and a couple of furniture repair jobs that came to me. (This is a commission that said, “Whenever you can get to it.” That’s not a good thing to say to me.) But, I worked most of the day yesterday on the chests of drawers and hope to post a f...

My Thorsen Table Project #1: Thorsen Table(s) - slow but steady...

933 days ago by schroeder | 15 comments »

I’m not sure I will be able to finish by the May 31 deadline – but I’m plugging along. I wanted to combine the project with gifts for two different weddings this summer. I opted to make them from Black Walnut, with a “Rodel” kind of look. I think Walnut is regal on it’s own, so I tried several methods to add the detail shown in the original design and ended up going with inlay of the same wood. I think it adds a complementary, but still subtle detail. I book matc...
