The rest…I had cut the parts for the ottomans and glued up (after a dry fit) – I finished the glue up – Then everything into the fume tent. I put it all in with 33% ammonia for 24 hours at about 65 degrees. When they come out they are almost black, a deep shade of gray – After putting on a coat of Arm R Seal sealer, everything turned a rich Carmel color.
The final result – one of two finished and one of five in process.

Okay, at this point, legs are glued up, rails, stretchers are cut along with all the mortices and tenons. I decided to make two chairs and ottomans to completion and then come back to the other two. The next step is to cut the stiles and tenon their ends. I planned for 3/8” tenons and cut them at a horizontal router, (although a good backer board and dado setup works as well).

…So I decided to take the plunge and make something for sale…on spec…I like the Morris chairs so that’s what I went with. Always a timeless classic, clean lines, and fun to build! We have glued the breadboard, fitted it with Mountain Mahogany caps, and sanded…and sanded….and SANDED! (dark wood – lotsa sanding)
This is with the third coat of sealer – now six coats of poly and we have to think about moving it (man its heavy!). Worth the effort thought to make such wild grain in the table.

Selling Point
Besides our clawfoot tub, the only nice thing in the our house when we bought it was the dining room.
A picture from our walkthrough. Fir wainscoting with a plate rail. We later found out that the wall paper is a custom reproduction of a Morris and Co. paper from the turn of the century. We have visited William Morris’ birth home and country farm in England last year.

Year OneOn our first night of ownership we tore out the nasty smoke and urine stained carpet (aka: floor protectors).

I “completed” the carcases and installation of the drawer dividers on the “twins.”

Whenever I draw up the plans myself instead of working from a published plan, I stop and dry fit often (probably too much) but I seem to catch errors in arithmetic and design faster this way. Here’s a couple of pics of the dry fit from yesterday. Click the thumbnail pics for a larger view.
Here's the way it looks with the frame and panels for the sides glued up and the back dry fitted and clamped in place.

I’m not sure I will be able to finish by the May 31 deadline – but I’m plugging along.
I wanted to combine the project with gifts for two different weddings this summer. I opted to make them from Black Walnut, with a “Rodel” kind of look. I think Walnut is regal on it’s own, so I tried several methods to add the detail shown in the original design and ended up going with inlay of the same wood. I think it adds a complementary, but still subtle detail.
