I found this talented woodworker’s site tonight through a post on Make Magazine’s blog. He makes very well crafted furniture in the Chippendale style, but also creates art pieces with meta-humor baked in. Some appear self-animated, the rest are a fun juxtaposition of solid craftsmanship and glaring oversights.
“Oops” in mahogany
“Crippled Table” in walnut and hickory
“How to Build Furniture” in cherry
“Self Portrait” in ...

I live in an old somewhat of a bungalow style house. It had been “updated” over the years (read in poorly remodeled” before we bought it.I have been working on it for years fixing past “updates”
We enjoy the Arts & Crafts style and are trying to finish the house to the degree.
I redid the living room years ago and it has served us well. Now it is time to start adding the details we desire.
Where we were…...............
I started off with ...

I guess it’s been so long since my last entry on this blog that I have to begin the series again. The New Blog entry page didn’t give me this title as a choice again.
I was sidetracked with the Thorsen Table challenge and a couple of furniture repair jobs that came to me. (This is a commission that said, “Whenever you can get to it.” That’s not a good thing to say to me.) But, I worked most of the day yesterday on the chests of drawers and hope to post a f...

Well, after three days in solitary, I decided to pop the the weasel. The different boards fumed to different tones, but I think with shellac and brown furniture wax, it’ll be just non-perfect enough for some charm. The wood putty had no tannins in it, so it’s almost white. Luckily, one corner is perfect, so that’ll be the one facing out. I tried my Dark Fumed Oak aniline dye, and it didn’t work on the putty either. I even brushed the liquid ammonia directly on...

I got the casters on yesterday, cutting some scrap wood board to fit along the edges inside the bottom, and joining them in with pocket hole screws from underneath. Extra sturdy now, and the wheels are all in plane with each other. I wasn’t sure how tall they were, and it was critical, as I was designing this to be as high as possible, while still fitting comfortably under my work table. I have Rockler’s digital height gauge, and it showed me they were all exactly 2.5” (actu...

I didn’t like how the “Ebony 2718” Minwax stain looked in the last entry in this series, so I grabbed a can of flat black paint from a recently completed project for my friends’ wedding, and after a 24-hour drying period, painted right over the stain.
I went out to the shop several times yesterday to sand @ 220-grit, and apply another layer of Minwax’s water-based polyurethane. Water-based simply because I had it, and I also don’t love finishing ...

UPDATE 3-28-2012: MISSION CASKET BOOK & PLANS AVAILABLE:After Posting my Casket Stories and Photos on Lumberjocks, I have been overwhelmed by the response from readers. There is quite a thread of folks wanting to assist in their funeral planning by building their own casket, or building one for a close friend or family member. There are many reasons a person would build their own casket...

Year OneOn our first night of ownership we tore out the nasty smoke and urine stained carpet (aka: floor protectors).
In the first month in our new house (March 2002) we added heat and quickly painted a bedroom.
Life might have continued on with me painting everything white had I not gone to a fantastic home tour in our neighborhood We quickly bought every book we could find on bungalows and took our first visit to the Gamble House.
That summer we taught summer school (booooo!) and w...

I’ve been so fantastically lazy these past 3 weeks of pseudo-laid-off time. I wanted to use this unexpected break to go nuts in the garage, as it’s what I’ve dreamed of for more than a year now, but I think the anticipation of hard times ahead, and light anxiety of not having a steady income at the moment (first time in 6 years – since shortly after moving to CA) has sapped my motivation almost entirely. I’ve done almost nothing but wait. I’ve had some thin...

As you may or may not know, last year I cut off my middle finger while ripping the legs out of the glued up blanks. I didn’t have a splitter, riving knife, pawls, or blade guard on the table saw and was then surprised when my finger was gone.
This year, I put a Uniguard blade guard w/ riving knife/splitter on my table saw and have been using a MagSwitch religiously. With the courage engendered by my recent successes, I got back on the horse that kicked my ass. This evening, I ...
