Forgive My Insensitivity…
A public Thank You is in order before I go any further. I had some great support from two individuals that are a part of LumberJocks.
I relied heavily on Dave Pruett for “on call” support to figure out how to edit / process / and post my video.
I need to thank Marc Spagnuolo as well. I did not continually call him like Dave, but his advice and pointers were taken to heart and helped me out as well.

A very good friend of mine has a father that is an avid woodworker. He chip carves, and makes many other things such as wooden spoons and the like on his drawhorse. He’s a very talented man. Anyway, he decided that he wanted a new stationary belt sander, and bought one. The older stationary sander was a Craftsman, and it had a few years under its belt. I was driving down the road today when I spotted a “FREE” sign on a dresser sitting on a driveway. I am not above picking up free furniture quality wood when I get a chance, so I stopped to take a look. The dresser was not of good quality. As I turned to return to my vehicle a man walked out and asked if I needed any other furniture. He was the landlord and a renter had abandoned a lot of stuff in the house. I’m not sure I will be able to finish by the May 31 deadline – but I’m plugging along.
I wanted to combine the project with gifts for two different weddings this summer. I opted to make them from Black Walnut, with a “Rodel” kind of look. I think Walnut is regal on it’s own, so I tried several methods to add the detail shown in the original design and ended up going with inlay of the same wood. I think it adds a complementary, but still subtle detail.

A few years ago I saw one of these planers listed as for sale and knew that I wanted one. From the first time I saw one, I knew I was going to get one. For the next several months I looked for the one for me at the price I wanted to pay. I saw several, but you would have thought these things are gold plated. This past week I had one fall into my lap for $40.00.
It was a bit “aged” and needed some work, but it cleaned up nicely.

What a day I’m having!
Okay, so September of last year I was gearing up to buy a band saw. I liked the Craftsman 18” Wood/Metal deal for $1300 (and eventually got that one). Above the picture on the saw’s page were clickable, hierarchical categories, something like “Power Tools > Saws > Band Saws.” You could click on each to go to broader categories – pretty standard. The rest…I had cut the parts for the ottomans and glued up (after a dry fit) – I finished the glue up – Then everything into the fume tent. I put it all in with 33% ammonia for 24 hours at about 65 degrees. When they come out they are almost black, a deep shade of gray – After putting on a coat of Arm R Seal sealer, everything turned a rich Carmel color.
The final result – one of two finished and one of five in process.

In my last post, I mentioned my planer seizing up entirely. I couldn’t move the belts, and I couldn’t spin the knife wheel. I also talked about how insanely built the Craftsman 13” is, and I still stand behind that. I think taking apart my Toyota pickup’s engine might be less involved. I’ve been so fantastically lazy these past 3 weeks of pseudo-laid-off time.
