Well, I’m new to the whole blog thing….the ‘puter and I rarely see eye-to-eye, so I’ve never tried….well see how it goes :) I am making some progress on the two entries. The “not just any box” catagory is a great opportunity to do something I otherwise can’t really do…build somethiing that I’d seen before (sort of!) I saw this jewellry box a while back, and it really “spoke”to me…but when your business is origin...
Hi all,I don’t know if everyone pays attention to the annual contest on LJ’s, but this one I don’t understand. I just can’t figure out what this contest wants us to do. I even asked a couple of friends of mine, thinking that it was me not knowing what this has to do with. They did not know either. How are we suppose to show fluidity or movement in wood? If that is what this is saying. Can someone please explain what they are asking us for in this contest? Below is ...
The Sawdust Chronicles’ 30-Day Challenge is simply that – a challenge. We will be challenging you, the beginning woodworker, to complete a woodworking project within 30 days. We pick the project, you find or create the plans, you iron out the details, you complete the project, and you reap the rewards. The level of difficulty of the challenge should be self-scaled depending on your level of woodworking talent. A majority of the challenge is dependent upon the honor system. There ...
I’ve been meaning to make my 8 year-old a workbench so he can ‘help’ me when I’m out in the shop, but kept putting it off. When I saw Baligh’s latest contest, I couldn’t think of an idea for a project, then it hit me: “I’ll make a workbench!”. So, here it goes. This is what I started with: 1- 8’ 2×8 piece of Douglas Fir, 6 board feet of 1×6 pine, 1-4×4x1/2 sheet of CDX plywood (not shown), 1-3’x1” ...
Had a slight mishap today when I went to mill the legs down so they'd be the proper width after applying a "veneer" edge, I accidentally cut all the pieces! I should have left the those at the final width, I got a little carried away. A little creative thinking and milling a few more pieces out of the remaining door stock, and I'll have legs that will ultimately be a mere 3/16ths skinnier, but and I'm able to proceed using only this reclaimed door lumber. I've thought the inspiration ...

I should have made a paper template of the parts for this table (actual size). Until I finally cut everything down to size I didn't really see how small this table really was, and with the off cuts I have lying around (had I been more careful early on) I could have made a pair of tables! Lesson learned there. Oddly I did this with my first box in order to figure out my cut list (and how to best maximize a tiny piece of cherry I used for it. If only I remembered. Anyhow, I'm feeling ...
