I would like to start a friendly competition based on the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. The rules are pretty basic and I have tried to make them so that anyone can enter no matter what your woodworking style is.
1) The piece must be based on a work or works of Frank Lloyd Wright.
2) The piece must be a box or vessel. Basically it must be able to hold something inside it.
3) Any woodwork technique can be used as long as it fits in with the other rules.
4) Any materials can...

I received today my prize for winning fifth place in the Summer 2009 LumberJocks contest.
I wish to thank Major League Woodworking
The prize consisted of a T shirt ”Property of Major League Woodworking Shop Dept”, A Maple Mallet which is modeled after a Baseball Bat. It’s made from an approved bat billet and is made at one of the countries premier baseball bat factories.
Also a Maple Marking Gauge for giving a perfect ”base line” for starting woodworking...

Show Time
I was excited about the show/contest and woke up early (again). We jetted down to Cerritos Community College. Judging had begun at 8:00 in the morning, though we arrived at 11:00 for the barbecue, show tour, raffle, and prize announcements.
The Welcome Wagon
Each guest was provided one raffle ticket and a ballot ticket to vote for People's Choice award (Worth $1000)
We anxiously walked towards our project.
Yes! We learned they had been very liberal with the turn in ti...

One of my first ideas for this challenge was to make a “green” table – as in recycled, not painted. After weeks of pondering, and ultimately ignoring the problem of where to begin, and more importantly, what to use, I remembered that I had this door sitting in my shed.
It may have been original to the house, but has been collecting dust for the past 5 or so years since we bought the house and replaced the exterior doors – this one had dog door cut out of it and was ...

Had a slight mishap today when I went to mill the legs down so they'd be the proper width after applying a "veneer" edge, I accidentally cut all the pieces! I should have left the those at the final width, I got a little carried away.
A little creative thinking and milling a few more pieces out of the remaining door stock, and I'll have legs that will ultimately be a mere 3/16ths skinnier, but and I'm able to proceed using only this reclaimed door lumber. I've thought the inspiration ...

We have completed the entry phase of the Summer Contest
27 Entries have been entered into the Outdoor Projects.
18 Entries have been entered into the Joinery Projects.
Good luck to all entrants.
And we wish the best to each and everyone of them.
We also wish the best who were unable to complete in time or were unable to even get started.
There will be more contests and challenges. I’d like a greater number next time.

Well, I’m new to the whole blog thing….the ‘puter and I rarely see eye-to-eye, so I’ve never tried….well see how it goes :)
I am making some progress on the two entries. The “not just any box” catagory is a great opportunity to do something I otherwise can’t really do…build somethiing that I’d seen before (sort of!) I saw this jewellry box a while back, and it really “spoke”to me…but when your business is origin...

Are you knotty and keeping secrets?
Then it’s time to get busy and creative again and compete for some great prizes in our Winter 2009 edition of the LumberJocks Woodworking Awards.
You are welcome to participate in the following two categories:
