project challenge #1: Hey Martin! Where's the holiday decoration project challenge?

32 days ago by tooldad | 1 comment »

I finally have time to decorate and there appears to be no challenge for the current holiday as there was for Halloween. Any chance of creating one? If not I challenge everyone! Since I will be an entrant, I cannot be a sponsor, that’s the rules. My entry will be up be the end of next weekend. Tooldad

Step Stool #10: Hey Brother, Can You Spare a Vote?

87 days ago by Eric | 5 comments »

I’ve entered my step stool in a contest on SmartFlix (think NetFlix for DIYers). While I do believe in “May the best man win,” I’m no fool: all the other contestants are probably trying to get votes just like I am! So how about it? Click on the link to go to the contest page. Thanks in advance for your vote! P.S. I plan to do a write-up on SmartFlix in the near future, so stay tuned for that.

Baby Furniture #9: One Man's Junk contest question

164 days ago by Kevin | 2 comments »

If I don’t get a lot done in the next couple evenings, this will be a mute point I know. But, I was wondering if you guys would consider my crib able to be entered in the contest. I’ve never entered anything yet and thought it’d be a neat side note to the crib story. The lumber is all from my wife’s uncle. Him and his father milled it 20 plus years ago. We helped him haul a bunch of good quality lumber out of a place he rented to his farm. After that was finished, h...

Bhutanese Inspired Bookcase

262 days ago by lobbster | 8 comments »

This design is a takeoff of a night table design I did last year. The influence is the architecture of Bhutan. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, one of only about three places in the world that share this type of architecture. Bhutanese temples are characterized by their inward sloping walls and graduated windows.Front View: I used a combination of the golden ratio and Hambidge Progression to come up with the dimensions. The bookcase is open on both sides and can be plac...

Book shelf #1: My entry for Popular Woodworking Bookcase contest

263 days ago by Nathanp | 3 comments »

Hello all, Found my way here from Popular Woodworking editor’s blog. Nice place you got here. This is my entry for the Popular Woodworking bookcase contest. It is also my first Sketchup project. The shelf is the foundation of several variations I’d like to do (formal\classical, Asian). I’m still learning Sketchup, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to get pictures of those up before the deadline. A couple of pictures: And here's a link to the ...

Well, I’m new to the whole blog thing….the ‘puter and I rarely see eye-to-eye, so I’ve never tried….well see how it goes :) I am making some progress on the two entries. The “not just any box” catagory is a great opportunity to do something I otherwise can’t really do…build somethiing that I’d seen before (sort of!) I saw this jewellry box a while back, and it really “spoke”to me…but when your business is origin...

Le Roi est mort

493 days ago by scottb | 3 comments »

The king is dead. A few weeks back, while we sure had some fierce gusts of wind, which caused my chess trellis to tip over. And while the (wood only) joinery of my trellis survived the impact with the ground (rocks and/or pottery) the wood itself did not. I found everything still together, save for the King himself. I originally intended to reattach it, but had the quick inspiration… a little poetic je ne sais quoi… some sort of “art (or hidden meaning) is in the e...
