Primary Colors #1: This IS my first rodeo

1117 days ago by newTim | 7 comments »

A little arts and crafts on a Sunday afternoon. I’ve been wanting to try my hand at dyeing and tinting for a while so in typical New California Workshop style I jumped right in. In this round I’m using TransTint dyes from Woodcraft mixed in water. You can see my calculations written on the paper. I diluted about a half an ounce of tint into about 16 ounces of water. I just used bottled water and spilled out a little to approximate 16 ounces. I made up some samples from tiger...

"Art-Full Color" --by RusticWoodArt

2492 days ago by frank | 3 comments »

Art-Full Color Color that is felt, is in essence the pigments of shadowed hues brought to life, by an imaginative handwork, of the artist…. —-all creation awaits the expression of color, that the artist feels rising up within his//her makeup, and so when color explodes with strokes of warmth or coldness, there is the drawing or expelling of those who come to watch. —-color was never created to just be watched, but to be felt! —-it is in the feeling of color...

Lumber #4: Urban Logging Starts Here

1429 days ago by PurpLev | 16 comments »

OK, it didn’t really start HERE, but way back about the time I signed up for lumberjocks when I got these applewood logs. I already mentioned it in a previous post, but for those that did not read it here it is again (if you’ve read it you can skip to step 3) The Applewood Logs Story2007, I was just getting into woodworking, had a circular saw, drill, and a router. my wife saw an add on craigslist giving away applewood. I went to see the guy, a nice older woodworker that was mo...

TheWoodWhisperer Woodworkers Fighting Cancer Rocking Horse #3: Childs play (Coloring)

1046 days ago by PurpLev | 4 comments »

Probably not what I’d do on some projects, but on this one it was the perfect opportunity to let my daughter draw and paint the horse prior to sealing it. She was so excited helping out and painting it that it was all worth it. I basically let her complete freedom and a full set of brushes and water colors and away she went. Note to self – for painting a large surface better to use larger finishing type brushes and not art brushes as it took forever to just paint the main th...

"Colors That New Hampshire and Japan Share" --by RusticWoodArt

2512 days ago by frank | 10 comments »

Colors That New Hampshire and Japan Share The peak time of year Each September and October people from all over the world come to New Hampshire to see the fall foliage and take a foliage tour. Only two places in the world, New Hampshire and we’re told parts of Japan, have the unique combination of climate and topography that results in this brilliant foliage, but nowhere does the landscape, from mountains to the lakes and sea, provide a better vantage point to see the colors.....w...

My Canarywood purchase

2390 days ago by GaryK | 15 comments »

Last week while I was in California I stopped by at a place I used to get wood.I was just going to look until I found this canarywood. All of the canarywood I haveseen before has been straight grain kinda plain looking. Here is 17bf I had shipped back home. $5.99 a BF. The flash washes out the color, and without the flash it’s dark. So I included both. It’s kind of hard to get a true sense of what it looks like in a picture but I think youwill get the idea. Almost all the col...

Evolving Band Saw Project #6: Evolution continues - expect the unexpected!

306 days ago by wyeth | 3 comments »

Nearly 3 years ago I halted this blog – perhaps a little discouraged that some found it ugly or at least disconcerting aesthetically. It sat about for years as things do but evolution comes in bursts as does inspiration.REALLY do we all find everything in nature beautiful? Not at all – but everything in nature is beautiful to at least some of us.So it is with Art and Craft. SUDDENLY THINGS ARE ON THE MOVE AGAIN. BUT HEY! What is this? and this It seems as if ...

"Escaping a Brain Freezin' MeltDown With WoodArt" --by RusticWoodArt

Escaping a Brain Freezin’ MeltDown With WoodArt ....what you must understand is that here I am sitting this morning before this crazy computer screen and all these figures of dimensions on my desk….blueprints, sketch designs, numbers and more numbers, while I put together an order for an up and coming renovation. This is not the part of the job I like and so I am giving thanks that the numbers are all starting to finally come together. It’s a rainy day here and as I ta...

"Dis-Membered Barkin' on a Pine Slab" --by RusticWoodArt

2499 days ago by frank | 7 comments »

Dis-Membered Barkin’ on a Pine Slab ....ended my day the other evening removing some more bark from a pine slab I’m trying to get dried out, in the faster then usual manner since this is one I want to start workin’ on around January. Much of my time spent outside now is divided between cutting new trees for next year, cutting slabs for future furniture and ‘wood art’ that has to be processed for drying a year to two years down the road. While then finding the ...

"Savage Semblance of Colors" --by RusticWoodArt

2593 days ago by frank | 8 comments »

Savage Semblance of Colors ....and for from where-all comes beauty, as i am extolled amongst the sweetened background of your desire, while coming forth into the arena of eye as i, so that in this place of savage semblance of colors i give thanks…. And so I thought I would take a lazy morning stroll down the paths of close to home today, before I enter into the toiling of be-grimed striving to make work a place of play. So the invitations have now been sent out, for any and all t...
