thien dust separator/collector

10-14-2014 07:01 PM by harum | 0 comments »

Finally got my version of thien separator working after several rounds of trial and error. Thought I could share my findings. It’s made of a 5 gal big-box bucket, plywood, and plastic plumbing fittings. A 32 gal plastic trash can was used for collecting dust. Silicone adhesive and insulating self-adhesive tape were used to make the separator and dust bin combo as air-leak-free as possible. This is inside the separator looking at the intake pipe (black) and the pipe (whit...

Designing the Thien Baffle in Sketchup

07-27-2014 02:37 AM by Sk1pp3r | 1 comment »

I am just posting my journey for my upgrades to the Harbor Freight Dust collector I got. I have been using it stock except for the wynn filter cartridge and have been happy with it so far, however I have been getting some leaks and will smell the wood dust coming from the collector after cutting items. So I figured if I am going to seal the leaks, I better just build a whole new cart and add a Thien Separator. The first post here is detailing the Thien Separator. I went over to his we...

Dust Collector

01-20-2013 01:02 AM by chazmonro | 14 comments »

I modified my Harbor Freight dust collector. I run it through a dust separator first which works like a charm, and then the fines end up in the black can. I was tired of struggling with the bags so I added the black plastic can, i went overboard on the lever latches.

New Shop! #9: More work done and dust collector delivered!

09-29-2012 03:15 AM by Ryan Haasen | 4 comments »

We have been working hard on getting everything done on the inside of the wood shop bay because the dry wall is being put on this weekend. Here’s a list of the progress: -Plumbing for bathroom-Dust collector delivered-Sections around the shop paved-Vapour shield on-Windows torn out I started setting up the Grizzly Dust collector, but two of the leg braces were not the correct size. I emailed grizzly and they will be sending me the correct parts. I’m pretty excited to...

Evolution of a Shop #8: HFDC Upgrade

03-06-2010 03:04 PM by Cory | 7 comments »

I have been wanting to get a trash can separator for my Harbor Freight dust collector since I bought it. I still don’t have the separator built, but I did make a great improvement to the unit, IMHO. I’m sure many of you have seen the stovepipe mod, or the Delta collector with room underneath the blower for a separator where the motor and the ring are in line. I wanted to try the same thing on the HFDC. The challenge is that the DC motor is really heavy and I wanted to keep th...

Dust Collection #2: infiltration.... filter me this, filter me that

01-13-2009 04:34 AM by PurpLev | 28 comments »

I ordered a 0.3 micron replacement filter from Wynn Environmental to replace my Jet DC1100 30 micron bag. Originally I was going to make a simple review for people to benefit from my experience with the new filter I got… but since it had gotten a bit more complicated, I figured this is blog-worthy, and the ‘regular’ review will follow once I experience more the performance of the filter. Disclaimer: I have had nothing but great experience from Wynn Environmental, from ...

Dust Collection Progress..

09-08-2008 06:52 AM by CraftsmanCollective | 16 comments »

So in my first blog entry I touched on my dust collection progress. I’ve recieved a bit of interest with it so I thought I might share some of what I’ve learned to help others get a head start on thier system or to improve the system they already have. I’ve spent a ton of time researching and testing this stuff and can geniunely say that what I post here works exceptionally well. I do alot of work with MDF and we all know of the hazards of wood dust, especially MDF. Im ...

Concept Sketch: President Barak Obama Carved Bust Top Political Figure Collector Cane

09-04-2008 10:57 PM by Mark A. DeCou | 13 comments »

Another short Blog entry to post a concept sketch of a President Barak Obama Walking Cane. This cane design has been inspired by several historical examples of Election and Political Figure “Bust Top” collector walking canes. I have another design I’m working on the concept sketch for with an “Abraham Lincoln Bust Top” walking cane, and he’s deceased, and so that can not be determined as “politics”, just art. Ha. thanks for looking,Mark ...

Dust Collection #1: (Finally) Upgrading from a Shop-Vac

08-15-2008 10:02 PM by PurpLev | 11 comments »

So for the longest time I’ve heard how much a Shop-vac doesnt quite cut it when it comes to larger machines, and how much quieter “real” DC machines are compared to a shop-vac, but being a weekend warrior, my budget is limited, and space was a big issue for me until recently (we just moved, and I have a full garage to work with now – will be blogged soon as well). Lately I was eyeing some Delta AP400 machines that float on craigslist once in a while for very attract...

Dust Collector #2: The final solution - completed.

04-23-2008 08:20 PM by GaryK | 23 comments »

Well, this is the second and final part of my dust collector retro-fit. Here you can see the two boxed as I recieved them:.. Here they are unpacked and stacked. I removed the Dust Dog label. I figured that it didn’t do anything but restrict air flow. It came off easily.. Here you can see the handle that created some confusion in the first part of this blog... As the handle is rotated it makes these “paddles” brush against the pleats of the filterknocking off the ...
