Nakashima Inspired Coffee Table #2: Epoxy Fill and Cleanup

735 days ago by PittsburghTim | 0 comments »

After cleaning the bark, the next task at hand was to fill the large crack in the top and the slab for the legs with epoxy, I used blue masking tape to cover the openings on the underside and the sides of both pices of walnut and placed them both over plastic/paper drop cloths from the depot. Their cheap and protect my benches and floor. I used System 3 mirror coat two-part epoxy, mixed according to the instructions using some cheap plastic mixing cups from an autobody supply house. I p...

In the wood shop today #7: Applying oil/resin finish to curly walnut trestle coffee table

744 days ago by Canadian Woodworks | 3 comments »

In this video I’m applying my 3 part hand rubbed oil/resin finish to a Canadian Black Walnut coffee table base. I talk more about what and amount of ingredients in my 3 part hand rubbed oil resin finish. I can’t call it mine though, pretty sure it’s been used by many many people. I initially read about it in a Sam Maloof book I think it was called Woodworker. Well I hope you enjoy the video, I finish it up by showing the curly walnut book matched live edge coffee table to...

In the wood shop today #6: Resawing a 17'' wide 2'' thick live edge canadian black walnut slab

755 days ago by Canadian Woodworks | 4 comments »

I’m using my band saw to re-saw a 2’’ thick piece of Canadian black walnut into 2 boards that I will glue up for the top of a coffee table top. This is a live edge board that measures about 17’’ at it’s widest part, I’ve already squared up the board using my planer due to the boards width. I plan on using the resawn boards for a solid walnut maloof inspired coffee table, I’ve never done this coffee table base with a live edge so I’...

Nakashima-esque Coffee Table #1: Step-by-step Tabletop

762 days ago by Donowoodworks | 4 comments »

I have been itching to make a table for a while now. Not just any table, mind you, but a live-edge table made from a slab or two. When summer began I told myself that I would do it, and while I was browsing the internet looking for wood slabs, I came across a gentleman who had literally hundreds of slabs sitting in his back yard, waiting to be sold.I looked up the address and saw that it was close to some family members, some seven hours of driving away. “Perfect excuse.” I tho...

Mission to two Mission Coffee Tables #3: Tenons Tenons Tenons...

782 days ago by Everett1 | 3 comments »

It’s been a busy and productive past two days. Got all my stock to dimension and ready to go. Cut everything to length with my uber awesome “miter station”... Oh yeah, look at my built in stop blocks baby! I’m a tenon’s first kind of guy. My only reasoning, and not sure how good it is, is I like to take the pieces with tenons, and use those in 3D for the layouts of my Mortises. With a piece like this with a lot of slats, I feel it’s easier that wa...

Rustic Coffee Table Top from Start to Finish

791 days ago by SergeantSawDust | 3 comments »

This was a project I started before my sudden deployment in September 2011. I got as far as assembling the base and making the drawer but much was left to be desired. Eight months later I got the opportunity to come home on R & R for two weeks and finish my project. I’m thrilled to bring closure to a project I started so long ago and have the chance to feel like a civilian once again as I turn back to finish my 2nd deployment. It’s the little things you miss the most. ...

Outdoor Furniture #9: Finally Finished!

817 days ago by Retsof | 7 comments »

It took me nine days from start to finish, but I’m finally done with my Adirondack Patio Set. I am really tired of painting too! The chairs are sitting by the pool where they and I will be spending Memorial Day. Hunter and Huckleberry, my English Springer Spaniels, approve. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to format my photos so the right 1/3 of the picture doesn’t get cut off when I link them in my blog? If not, I guess I’ll have to make sure all the im...

Outdoor Furniture #8: A Coffee Table Too

I decided to add a coffee table to my set with some of my extra lumber. The kids and I spent the day sanding and priming all the furniture. Tomorrow is painting day! Can’t wait to see them in my backyard by Sunday evening.
