This is a Shaker-inspired coat rack (hey, winter is on the way) that has four small drawers to hold keys and little stuff.
Watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8hT5VQCUSM In this episode, I stain and finish the base and talk a little how I’m not so sure that I made the best decision with stain.
Part 5 of the coat rack build: http://youtu.be/SMbNqkkUldE In this video, I finish up cutting the legs out that I had traced from the template last video, then I use a router table for the first time ever and flush trim all of the legs to the template.
Spirostachys africana is a medium-sized (about 30 ft tall) deciduous tree with a straight clear trunk found in the warmer parts of Southern Africa. Its wood is known as tamboti, tambotie, tambootie or tambuti. It prefers growing in single-species often along watercourses or on brackish flats and sandy soils. Despite its being prone to heart-rot, it is prized in the furniture industry for its beautiful, dense and durable timber, which is reddish-brown with darker streaks, a satin-like lu...
So, just yesterday my wife and I were talking. With Christmas coming up, we were trying to figure out where to put up the stockings. Inspiration hit like a bolt of lightning…or maybe it was the third glass of Jameson (yesterday wasn’t a good day after all). Either way, I came up with an idea that should be a nice little project that will also help fill a definite need in our house. My plan is to take some simple pine and run coat pegs through it – enough so that there&...
Hat and coat racks such as this are not for sale through any furniture outlets in our city of 6 million—at least not the kind you’d want. The plank used for this was found on a weekend outing in Hunan’s countryside. The farmer was so polite I had to insist on paying him something for the 4 pieces of unidentifiable hardwood. Even after cleaning it up and planing it, I still cannot confidently say what this beautiful red-streaked piece is. I welcome any guesses. The coat...
Another money-saving (I hope) project that I did recently was a coat rack made from a couple of old wooden skis my grandfather left to me. He had two pairs from his youth that were still in pretty good shape. I still can’t believe people used these things. Again, my wife and I were looking through catalogs (Pottery Barn or something similar) and saw that they had old wooden skis made into coat racks and hung on a wall. We got to think…Hey, we have skis!!! But look what they...
It’s Winter here and the White Season brings with it the need for heavy jackets…We have closets for them, but they’re upstairs… Most of the time, the coats end up hanging on the Chair-backs in our kitchen, where they are ready-to-hand… But no one wears the same coat every day, and we end up with half the wardrobe cluttering up the Kitchen! There was a need here for a simple place to hang our Winter “Stuff”... Yesterday, I got a chance to fill that nee...
Watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDfdmsKaSPo In this episode, I cut the base down to final length and shape it on the router table. Then I put a round-over on the legs and glue them to the base.
Here is part 4 of the video series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_STCn7xmlY In this one, I trace the template and cut the tenons on the legs that will attach to the coat rack base. I still haven’t done anything for the top of the coat rack, as far as hooks go. I know what I will do for it, i think, but being that I already have no woodworking budget, it may have to wait a little while.
