Making a CNC Router #1: Part 1: Assembly

1236 days ago by KylesWoodworking | 30 comments »

Well I just turned 17 years old today, February 23, 2011, and I have always wanted to make a CNC router. So for my birthday, I asked my dad to get me a CNC hardware and plans kit from www.buildyourcnc.com. Then I went to Lowes and the Home Depot to get a sheet of MDF, aluminum angles, threaded rods, and various other items I needed to make the machine. So the whole weekend last week, I’ve been working on cutting all the parts I need and then drilling all the holes in the pieces. Here is...

Making a CNC Router #2: Part 2: Making the Stand

1234 days ago by KylesWoodworking | 10 comments »

Well today I didn’t have school due to a snow day, so I figured I would work on my CNC some more. I knew that I needed a stand to put the CNC on and to make it sturdier, so I was off to Google SketchUp! I wanted to make the CNC about counter height, so I made the stand 34 1/2” high plus the 1 1/2” table of the CNC makes it 36” high overall. Here is the simple design that I came up with using 2×4s for the stand: So I was off to making saw dust!First, I cut f...

Making a CNC Router #3: Part 3: Updates and Need Ideas

1216 days ago by KylesWoodworking | 11 comments »

I have not had much time or money to work on my CNC lately, but I did make some progress. Here are some of the things I added to it so far: I added two shelves for the computer and electronics to go on: I also bought 4 cheap casters from Harbor Freight and installed them: Also, on an unrelated note, my dog loves the new shelf and sleeps on it all the time: Now for some ideas: I need some where to mount a computer screen to use for the CNC and I have a few ideas, but...

Birth of a 4-axis CNC machine #8: Control box enclosure - the machine now has a key!

118 days ago by DS | 16 comments »

Now that I have all my power supplies drivers and controllers, all those electronics need a nice safe playground to hang out in away from the dusty environs that the machine will no doubt foster. At first I didn’t think I could get a box this nice. These water-tight Nema enclosures are big bucks! But, I found a guy on eBay with a reasonable asking price, ( his wife must’ve wanted to park her car in their garage again ), and I made an offer, sobbed out my poor man’s DIY cnc...

My CNC Router Table

541 days ago by allengambrell | 2 comments »

About a year ago I started looking into buying a table saw and decided to get a 3hp sawstop. After looking around I saw I could build a CNC machine for around the same money. I decided to go with the cnc machine to join my computer and building things hobbies. Here is the CNC router table that I built. It has a 48×48 inch cutting area with a 3hp (2.2kw) spindle. It is built from parts from cncrouterparts and 8020 extruded aluminum. It ran me around $3500 to get running. Parts Li...
