This pile of lumber may not look like much but it will magically turn in to two of my Fishy Coffee Tables and a Toy Box. :-) Turns out I need another 10 feet of white pine, so off to the store I go tomorrow. It makes it easy that a lot of the work for all three projects can be done ahead of time in a batch. Things like ripping the edges off the 2×4’s and ripping the 1×12 white pine into three pieces each. All of that was after I cut them into rough lengths so it would be ea...
Just a quick update.. I see a lot of views but no feedback.. I’m beginning to think this is a stupid idea but, I’m pushing forward anyway. I got the legs rough cut and ready to be mortised into the hinge. I also got the brass curve cut. The geometry of that thing is a bit confusing but I think once the legs are shaped and the mortise is in place for that to go through it will make more sense. Right now the curve doesn’t seem like it will want to go through the same spo...
I am continuing to organize my shop, adding cabinets and other tool hangers. This week I have added various tool holders to the my recent cabinet. (Documented here:) As a woodworker can never have too many clamps, then it calls for LOTS of clamp holders. Below is another clamp rack I built this week to hold most of my bar clamps: Thanks for reading.
Tools tools, I love toys, I mean tools #1: You can never have enough clamps, especially parallel clamps
I think I have a problem. I love clamps so much that it must be infectious, that my 2 year old daughter gets excited when she sees clamps. My wife has pointed out that I probably have more clamps (built up in 2 years) than her parents keep in stock at any point in time (they run a hardware store…). I’m in denial that I probably have enough clamps to get this hobbyist through most projects they I may undertake in the near future. Recently I have begun building up my supply of w...

Out in the shop today dry fitting a small scale (6”x8”) prototype of an end grain cutting board using cheap Poplar to hold costs down and hone my technique. (Heck, given my lack of experience it’s more like creating a technique!) The first dry fit went easily – too easily when I pondered it. So I tried again, this time imagining the pieces all slippery with glue… And sure enough all the parts ‘skidded around’ and a couple ended up on the ‘...
We continue on with the build and get our dados sorted out.
I decided to abandon the firewood plane blank after I realized it was lodgepole pine. I’m playing it safe by using a Maple turning blank. It was about 2×2x20. I cut it down to two 10” segments and glued them together to make a 2×4x10 blank. It will be a little wider than necessary, but I’ll have plenty of room for error when I rip the sides. It also turned out the blade on my thrift-store #5 is more pitted than I had hoped. I sharpened it as best I cou...
