Big wood find #5: The base comes together

1203 days ago by rtb | 6 comments »

I probably should have updated this about a week ago but the best laid plans of mice….etc . Drilling 5/8 holes through 1 in of white oak 3 in. cherry and an additional 1 in. of red oak is not something that you can whip out in 45 seconds. You are constantly removing the bit to clear the hole of the waste and there are many holes in this base. This assembly is still quite rough and there will be a lot of sanding and planning once its all together. As the above picture sh...

004: cheap, rolling lathe stand #3: drawers from scrap material

1209 days ago by Gary Fixler | 5 comments »

In keeping with the “don’t spend anything” ethic of this piece, I found some scrap 1/2” boards. Two were longer scraps of baltic birch ply, but there was only enough with the long grain for the 2 sides of each drawer. I had a stack of scraps of the same stuff but with the grain running across the width, so I cut 2 of those down for the backs. The fronts I made from scrap 1/2” construction grade ply. The drawer fronts would cover those up. The bottoms are 1/8̶...

The making of a Telescope Eyepiece box #2: More pictures

1210 days ago by Dennis Fletcher | 2 comments »

I have been busy, as of late, with actual work, going out of the shop to build, so I have been slow at getting pictures of this box uploaded. For any who are interested, here are current pictures. I need to put a finish on it, molding on it and complete the interior. (A small box that will be able to be lifted out for filters.) Last, but not least, I need to add some sort of handle on each side.

Built-in bookcases and mantel for fireplace surround in a Tudor Revival

1212 days ago by Jonathan | 4 comments »

(Please note: I originally posted this earlier today as a forum topic, but then decided to put it in as a blog entry in order to keep all of my entries together. I have also added more information to this posting here.) A year ago Christmas, Santa promised my wife that he’d build built-in bookcases with doors, as well as an adjoining mantel. Well, Santa got busy over the course of that year landscaping most of the yard by laying brick pavers, constructing a couple of raised brick planter b...

Just for Fun... #11: Wrapping it up...

1232 days ago by littlecope | 16 comments »

Not much left to go here! We left off with the box in my make-shift box vise, with the hinges glued in place…I began yesterday by cutting and cleaning-up as many pegs as I’ll need to pin them on, in this case fourteen. Then I’ll measure to set the Drill Stop depthSetting the Drill Stop. I used a couple of spare boards to get close to the height, then fine-tuned by adjusting the drill in the chuck a little…I had pre-drilled these pilots slightly undersized to create less...

Just for Fun... #10: Some Assembly Required...

1235 days ago by littlecope | 11 comments »

After making the hinges and knob in Episode #9, it was time to return to the box again. I had taken the time to sand the sides as I went, so all that was left to sand were the panels. After that was done, I was left with a difficult choice. Both panels looked good as the top, and turned either way, forwards or backwards! I finally made the choice (probably the wrong one) and it was assembly time.Clamped one side, with the handle next to the desired corner…Then the Other…This whole...
