First Table #1: My first table

668 days ago by Boon | 6 comments »

This is table i’m working on, I know its a little “grand” for a first timers table, but I figured if I can do this table, it will make doing future tables much easier. I’m a child of the 80s and i grew up around 70s and early 80s furniture and if you remember, it was all massive and looked like wood. I love huge furniture still and can never just let a good floor model tv go to waste (i made a router table out of one and a fish tank out of another). So without rega...

Mission Inspired Couch Table #1: Starting my first 'big' project...

675 days ago by itsme_timd | 6 comments »

I love Mission style furniture and am working on my first piece, a couch table that will be used as an aquarium stand. I’m trying to take my time with this one, it gets worked on a little at a time in between some of my smaller projects. The table is red oak from HD. I don’t have a planer yet so I needed to buy lumber that was close to size and fairly finished. I want to try somethung in quarter sawn white oak next. I just finished one side of the table and wanted to post...

Not Just Any Box #1: Preparing the Way

681 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 14 comments »

I’d been living with this board of burr / burl or pippy oak in the workshop for five or six years and must have picked it up and put it back down at least a hundred times (approx!). I have done quite a few boxes in the past with lids something like this: but I always intended that this piece would be used in a different way, and for something a little bit special. Though I’ve made many boxes, I have never thought of doing one for me, so this challenge presents an opportunity. ...

The multi-purposed 2x4 Winter 2008 #1: Roughing it out.

688 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 6 comments »

I normally spend very little time in my workshop in the winter months. The build-up to Christmas is a busy time, what with all the gifts I choose to make, and it always seemed much more appealing indoors. The ten paces through wind and rain to my ‘shop seemed such a long walk. (Here's the finished chair.) Until the Lumberjocks challenge, that is! My wife can’t believe the enthusiasm I’ve shown the last few days to get out there after breakfast, only returning when she presses t...

2X4 Winter Contest #1: The beginning

690 days ago by Jamie | 4 comments »

Well, I started working on my 2×4 project today. Last weekend I picked up a bunch of 2×4’s at Lowes to construct a new lumber rack, with 1 to spare for the contest. I was a little afraid that one 2×4 wouldn’t be enough to complete the project, but it looks like I will have a few scraps left. I cut some of the pieces today, 4 – 18” long pieces have been jointed and edge-glued together to form one plank (needed it to be a little longer than what is r...

Homemade "Tools"

715 days ago by itsme_timd | 6 comments »

Thought I’d share a couple pics of some of my, umm… ‘creations’. I’m sure everyone has fabricated a makeshift tool before, and shopmade jigs are commonplace. Here are a couple ‘tools’ that I put together because I didn’t have the actual tool. Both of them worked great for their intended purpose. My Table Sander I simply took a full sheet of sandpaper, folded the end over the edge of my work surface and clamped it down then stuck a pie...

Pics of my hand-cut dovetails.

715 days ago by itsme_timd | 16 comments »

WARNING! The following pictures may be considered offensive by some, viewer discretion is advised… Here they are, by request, some pics of my first stab (as well as hack, saw, chop and sand) and hand-cutting dovetails. For the record, I did not use any special effects in the photography. What you see is the actual result of me trying to hand cut dovetails with a coping saw, hobby knife, Dremel and dull chisel. The picture quality is poor, that was intentional, the...

First attempt at hand-cut dovetails.

718 days ago by itsme_timd | 24 comments »

Now I see why they have machines to do this… I think I went into this overconfident in my abilities. How hard could it be to cut out a simple notch in a board??? Fairly hard when your attitude exceeds your ability. First, I bought a ‘fancier’ saw than the basic dovetail saw and it just made things worse. Then – when that didn’t work I broke out the coping saw for some nice wavy cuts, I got out the chisel and tore it up real good, and finally… the D...

Posted some projects.

725 days ago by itsme_timd | 2 comments »

Hi All, I posted some details and pics of my workshop today as well as some projects. I completed my first project recently – a headbaord for our guest bedroom. I’ve made some picture frames and working on a more ‘deluxe’ picture frame now. I’m going to need to jump in and look for some answers soon, the questions are starting to pile up!.

Shop Tools #7: Today's Finds - July 8 2007

873 days ago by WayneC | 8 comments »

Today was the monthly antique sale here in Sacramento. I got a few interesting things and almost got something I’ve been looking for. I pulled a Fulton #2 sized plane out of a box of old planes. I asked how much and was told $180. Perhaps for a nice Stanley, but for that kind of money I would have been better off buying an Lie-Nielson. Such is life. I came across a box of Saws and picked 3 out. I’m starting to look for a few good saws and these look like they could be res...
