Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Well, I was asked to put together a blog on how I made my segmentd ring. Since I had to make a new one for myself, (first one too small) I thought I would go ahead and do a step by step picture tutorial. My first time ever doing something like this , so hope it comes out OK.

I opened the shed door the other day, & discovered water on the floor.
I had just made a new shed door about a year ago. I thought the wind had blown water in from under the door.
Then I noticed sawdust on the floor with drip marks coming from above.
I looked up, & saw some funny looking white stuff coating the ceiling up in the corner above the
door. The top plate of the wall studs also had piles of sawdust on it, & ants galore!

Well, its been awhile now so i figured that it was time for another shop tour. i have made a lot of shop additions in the past few months and i have gone from just a kid with a few tools to this now having a fully funtional shop and being able to sell my work and taking in commissions. so here is my updated shop tour

Well folks!
It’s finally done!
This took a little longer than expected, because of the weather, & things.
It’s amazing that it looks just like the SketchUp plan, but I think a tad better looking though.
My Son, & his family really love it.
It’s almost like a new room on their house.
I also learned about the new way of staining treated lumber.
They don’t recommend letting it dry out for 60 to 90 days.

Now I see why they have machines to do this…
I think I went into this overconfident in my abilities. How hard could it be to cut out a simple notch in a board??? Fairly hard when your attitude exceeds your ability.
First, I bought a ‘fancier’ saw than the basic dovetail saw and it just made things worse. Then – when that didn’t work I broke out the coping saw for some nice wavy cuts, I got out the chisel and tore it up real good, and finally… the D...

Hey everybody, after a few personal messages here is my version of a how to on a Drunken Checker Board. I of coarse bow to the Chairman of the Board and pay tribute with beer. The quick and dirty instructions on how to make a zig-zag pattern cutting board.

Choose a couple different types of hardwood. The more colors the better. Below is cherry, maple and walnut. Rip strips of wood any width so the total with is about 12”. I have not really been woodworking all that long. I have actually owned a sawmill longer than I have been making any finished wood projects, long story. I have debated making a proper bench for some time. My old/first bench was a row of kitchen cabinets I took out on a remodel I did as a contractor with a solid plank on top. Everyone has different needs, I tried to design mine to fit the work I do. If I need to I can easily make modifications, as is I am calling it “done for now”....
