Crown Molding: Crafting Your Own Trim

2755 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 10 comments »

My wife is gone for a few hours this Saturday morning, and the kids are busy watching a video, so I will update you on what I am working on now. I’m right in the middle of a “fun” project. It is “fun” on many levels, mostly because I have had to stop and scratch my head a lot. For those of you with kids, or remember having kids, or know someone who has kids, Winnie the Pooh always says, “Think, think, think” while poking his temple when he is try...

Hanging Homemade Crown Molding: Suffering Through Mistakes & Learning Life's Lessons.

2746 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 11 comments »

I wanted to tell a little more about my experience with crafting my own crown molding, and share a couple of lessons I learned along the way. Previously, I showed how I formed and sanded the profile on the last blog of this topic, and so today I thought I would complete the task by showing the installation of the molding, and a few “gems” I discovered along the way. First off, I made very sure that my cabinet that I am hanging this crown molding on was as perfectly square on...

Sharing Photos of a "Great Celebration" Mass Service; From the Church Furniture Commission Project

2482 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 20 comments »

For several months during 2007, I had the privilege of building several pieces of commissioned furniture for the St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Strong City, KS. This church is part of the Wichita, KS Diocese. I finished up all of my work this summer, and have blogged, and added those projects as postings before. At the end of this blog, I will give a summary list of the items if you are interested in seeing the pieces I built. Also, I wanted to share the photos of the Sep...

Charles Rohlfs Oak Desk, Stickley Ellis Table & Iconic Crafts, Nelson Atkins Art Gallery Kansas City

849 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 23 comments »

Wow! I made it, I finally made it, and oh what a surprise to find a museum with Iconic Furniture pieces intermixed with a lot of European, Asian, Native American, Egyptian, and some strange Contemporary Stuff that someone else calls “art”. ————————- WARNING: If you are easily offended by my silly notions of what looks good and is well built, please don’t read any farther. I’m just giving my opinions, that is what ...

Ms Debbie P's 2007 Shop Tour and Inspection #8: Tuesdays With Mark Decou

2556 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 14 comments »

This week’s visit is to the shop of Mark Decou in the scenic Flint Hills of Kansas. I grew up in Kansas, and fished and hunted on “the old home place” not far from Mark’s neck of the woods. Big sky, broad vistas, rolling prairie hills with flint and limestone outcrops, farmsteads with Osage Orange hedgerows and babbling creeks. Plenty of serene space to contemplate the meaning of one’s existence. And contemplative is a natural adjective for Mark. He has done m...

Internet Business, and A Visit from Father Hein, Who was Checking Progress on His Commissioned Work

2117 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 9 comments »

Dealing with Internet Business:I haven’t had much time to blog this year. Blogging is fine, I like it, but honestly, who has time to read my dribble? I get enough encouragement to continue blogging that I make time for it when I can, but it has been awhile. Ever since Google started to find my lumberjocks postings in the Spring of this year, I’ve been pretty busy. Google had always fround my postings, and my website but the ratings were apparently so low on their list that...

Desk backboard, cubicle conversation piece

2080 days ago by rockb | 2 comments »

This simple project was prompted by a forum topic, What do you do for a living? The topic was interesting to me because of the diversity of the folks, jobs, specialties of many of you. I guess with 6000 plus people on LJ’s, there’s gonna be quite a cross section of life. One thing that we all do have in common is our love of wood and what can be created with it. Seems that after we make something, we like to share with others. Problem is, after we share with our wife/mo...

Commissioned Church Side Altars Complete!

2667 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 25 comments »

I am so excited this morning. Why you ask? I’m complete with the St. Anthony Church Side Altar commission project. I have more work to do on other pieces for the church by the end of the month. So, there isn’t much time to take a breath yet, but the completion of the Side Altars is a huge milestone for me, and my woodworking career. To be honest, there were some times that I wondered if I would ever get all of the details of these Altars complete. Total working time is a...

2nd Update on the Church Hymn Number Board Commission Project

2591 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 11 comments »

Today, Monday, I took photos of what I have accomplished on my Hymn Number Board that I am building for the St. Anthony Church in Strong City, KS. On one hand, it seems like I made a lot of progress since my last blog late last week, but when I look back over the photos tonight, I can see that the number of hours it takes me to do this tedious work is mounting. I started the project with the previous blog: http://lumberjocks.com/jocks/decoustudio/blog/1508 Also, since I had enough in...

Work Progress on my current Commission for the St. Anthony Church in Strong City, KS

2595 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 13 comments »

I have received some correspondence lately asking about what I am doing right now in the shop. So, I thought I would post a little progress on my current commission piece. The people at the St. Anthony of Padua Church in Strong City, KS asked me to build a Hymn Number Stand to match the other pieces in the church I did earlier this year. Here is a list of the other projects that go with this commission that I have already completed, some have been posted as projects, while others haven...
