Plans or No Plans?

05-11-2010 07:28 PM by HighRockWoodworking | 8 comments »

Last month I posted an article titled Old School V. New School, I have received lots of great comments and emails from this article and really enjoyed writing it as it made me think a lot about my grandfather and father. One of the last comments mentioned the difference between computer designed furniture and cabinets as compared to woodworker designed. This is a subject that I have been interested in for some time. As a project manager for a national multi-family builder I built on a ve...

Be Safe, Learn Something, and Have Fun!

05-13-2010 07:40 PM by HighRockWoodworking | 0 comments »

Back when I was in the Army I flew a lot with an old instructor pilot that before each flight he would say “be safe, learn something, and have fun”. He was very specific about the order it was said and it has always stayed with me and believe it translates to anything we do, especially woodworking. Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional woodworker safety should always be your first goal after that hopefully we will learn something and have fun doing it.Most of the accidents I have had...

Dear Sweetie

04-19-2010 04:54 PM by HighRockWoodworking | 14 comments »

Saturday I came in from the shop and went upstairs to see what my wife was doing. She asked if the floor had dried downstairs as she had just mopped. When I went back down I realized that I had tracked sawdust all over her freshly mopped floor. This made me start thinking about what a woodworkers spouse has to go through on a daily basis and decided to write this letter as a spoof. Hope you enjoy. Dear sweetie,I just wanted to write you this letter to tell you that I love you unconditi...

Drafting Desk #1: Drafting Desk part 2

04-06-2010 04:01 AM by HighRockWoodworking | 0 comments »

Last week I talked about the drafting desk that I am currently working on. I have made a lot of progress and now have all of the parts made and partially put together. Over the weekend my wife and I went up to North Carolina to spend Easter with our families. I took the opportunity to work in my fathers shop a little. If any of you read my blog “Old School v. New School” I spoke about how I grew up working in his shop but now have adapted my style around the space I have available at home...

Making the Podcast Rounds

11-13-2012 04:27 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 7 comments »

Hey guys – I was a guest on a couple of podcasts last week (I am way behind on timely blog entries.) First, I joined LJ member Marc Spagnuolo at the WoodWhisperer Guild. You need to be a member to access this podcast where we talk about doing built-ins. We cover several of the techniques, strategies and things to look for as you design and install a built-in project. If you are on the fence about if you should join the Guild or not, I will say that as a person that makes my living...

Prep for Finishing

04-25-2010 08:48 PM by HighRockWoodworking | 2 comments »

the years I had many different methods and idea about how to get a project ready for finishing. Like any other part of woodworking we all have our own way of getting to the finishing stage. Some smooth every part and piece with a drum sander, others use a jointer to clean the face of boards, and there are those that prefer hand tools and use a smoothing plane. The smoothing plane takes some practice and I do enjoy using hand tools on my projects but it is definitely a lot more work. No...
