My ordered Veritas Mk.II Honing Guide arrived yesterday afternoon while I was out blowing snow hither and yonder. It arrived in a slightly larger box than the one from the manufacturer. I was surprised it got here so quickly. When I looked at the originating address on the shipping invoice and box it became clear why. Lee Valley Tools Ltd has a physical presence in New York State: Ogdensburg. The shipping was free. Check. It was cheaper to buy from Lee Valley directly than through one of t...

Stepping through the beveled corner, art deco inlay, looking glass, into the world of woodworking is an experience that is humbling to say the least. On another woodworking site, a blogger posed the question, are ‘Dovetails’ overrated? The article was well written, the comments were astounding. The debate between the pro-tail vs. the pro-choice factions was more contentious than an abortion debate three days before a presidential election. Wonderland indeed! The one point that I t...
For the version with pictures, please click here. I didn’t have much spare time today but what I did have I used to take care of the next couple steps in the leg vise drama. First I removed the threaded rod and hacked off about 6-8” worth from the end. The rod was just about 2” too long to allow the chop to fully close. Then I figured out how to mount a handle. It occurred to me while I was trying to remove the rod from the bench from the test fit. If I could car...
If you haven’t seen it, I did a blog about all the stuff you can get at Zagreb’s Huge flea market. http://lumberjocks.com/gavinzagreb/blog Here I’ll show you what I bought. Everything together, 2 planes, a chisel, small file, and a hand drill. I think the lot was about US$35The hand drill reminded me of the first one I used as a kid, so bought it for my 5 year old son. The chisel is 2 cherries brand from Germany. 1 site said they are some of the best in the world. ...
Please click here for this image heavy post. For those of you who don’t know me, I am an amateur astronomer (besides dabbling in woodworking, writing, art, etc…). I started an astronomy at Wordpress lately to post pictures I’ve been taking through my telescope and other tidbits. I thought of a way yesterday to merge my two biggest hobbies, astronomy and woodworking. I decided to make a base for my Telrad reflex sight, to fit atop the Texas Yard Cannon. And, to make...
We are a type, we woodworkers. We are tool nuts, junkies. We love our tools. Somebody asked me once how many sets of chisels I have. I said, Only two. I have my old Marples firmer chisels from 1/4” to 3/4” and then my bevel edge Lie-Nielsens. And oh yeah, I have a missed match set of Japanese paring and mortise chisels. And I forgot the 3 or 4 Stanley 750’s I have collected, and the old Stanley butt chisels I bought when I started out. Then there’s those 3 big mortising chis...
Well after restoring the Clearcut chisels I figured they and the rest of my chisels should have a special place to call home. I took one of the drawers under my workbench and made it my chisel drawer. Check out this little video I titled THE PERFECT FIT. View on YouTube Thank you.
As I have stated a few times before I have only been at this wood working game for just over 2 years now. A few months into this journey I graduated up to some chisels and mallet simply trying to understand the elementary basics of paring down wood. I believe the first task was a very green horn lap joint followed by smashing a mortice in..lol. Maybe smashing is the only way of the untrained hands as they yearn to make masterpieces, only while seeing them in our dreams until we can put as man...
Well it’s official I am hooked… restoring old tools is my new obsession. This time I found some old chisels, Clearcut brand, ever heard of it? Me either. I also couldn’t find much information on the brand online, I did find one post that mentioned they are from Montgomery Ward but I can’t be sure of that. No matter the steel feels good. Guess we will see if it holds an edge. I also shot a video of the restoration which can be viewed here.View on YouTube As you can ...
