Hello,
My Lie-Nielsen 3/4” chisel and the fishtail, named Manfred and Donna respectively, did a great job today. We had lots of fun, despite me making one slight stratigic blunder.

Thanks,

Good Morning, my name is David Craig and I am a former sharpaphobiac transformed into a sharpaholic…
The art of sharpening has been very intimidating to me and it has really caused a bit of a road block to my work. No matter how many power tools you have in your collection, woodworking will ultimately lead you to a point where a chisel is in your hand and it needs to be sharp. I fiddled around with the grinder some, have purchased sharpening stones at the store, but I was really out ...

Hello Everbody,
I’m brand new to wood working and new to lumberjocks and so far everybody on here has been wonderful and welcoming and I just have a quick question.
I’m planning on buying my first set of chisels and I’m thinking about an Irwin 4-piece chisel set. I’ve read many reviews about Irwin Marples Blue Chip chisels but non about this set of Irwin Marple chisels. Are these good chisels? Heres a link:

Lately I’ve really been getting into hand tools.
I asked for a few Japanese chisels for Christmas (one each from a few different people in the family.) I ended up with a set of four from Woodcraft. I decided that this collection was worthy of family heirloom status so I had them laser engraved and built a box to keep them in.
I have always had a fascination with Japanese culture, art and woodworking. Lately I have been reading Japanese Woodworking Tools, Their Tradition, Spir...

Last time I showed the process for lapping the faces of the chisels. Here is the back of the 1/4” chisel.
In the next phase of chisel sharpening we learned to hone the bevels. In order to more easily hone the chisel by hand we ground a double bevel. For the purpose of the class we used a Tormek Super Grinder, however the same can be accomplished with a bench grinder and more care to not burn your steel. Here is a chisel that has been hollow ground…Hollow ground chisels provide t...

Alright turners. I’m pretty new to the club and am starting to gather info for my chess set that I want to make. I know I’m going to need a chuck to hold the pieces, but with the vast difference in prices and accessories that come with some, I’m at a loss. If any of you out there have suggestions, I would love to hear them while I gather information on my own. Price is important, but I need quality (i know, kinda needy). Right now, my front runner is the Nova Midi.I am also ...

Intro to Hand ToolsThree Saturdays ago, Kristin and I woke up early and headed down to good ol’ Cerritos Community College to start our new class, Woodworking with Hand Tools.
Previously we have taken Basic Woodworking, Cabinet Making and a Furniture Lab together. I have also taken table making and a few more lab classes. I have a pretty good grip on basic furniture making and power tool use, but have been frustrated in my use of hand tools. Kristin is not a fan of huge power tools...

Wood and I….Sculpture
….while walking down the isles of life’s design,i was roiled enough to loose my way on a walk-about,the forest and trees no-longer fed this hunger within, and for days becoming years my dreams died as inaesthetic….
….that was in-deed the hole i dug until i had no-strength dig deeper, what came next was confronting my dragon and refusing his lies any-more,so i went back to the woods fearing to hope and believe what i might find, what i found was that ...

Lots of vegetable gardening done in the past couple of months, and it could not wait, so the harp building project had to wait a while. Finally last week I got back into it after 6 weeks of seldom working on it. Now it is almost done- but let me go back to where I left off in March.I had these beautiful abalone mother-of-pearl wings provided to me by a fine Lumberjock. She also did a great blog about how to do inlays, and that was very helpful to me. I didn’t follow instructions exactly...

I want to apologize if my blog has been the most depressing so far. This week my wife lost her grandmother. If you have been following my posts this past year, we have seen a lot of loss in friends and family. She is in a better place, which in and of itself is a relief.
On to some good news. I have spent the past 6 months working on a project for a friend of mine. His office was due for some major updates to it’s network and server. This project has taken a lot out of me, both ...
