What I wish I'd known before spending money on woodworking hand tools #1: New? Used? You decide.

1244 days ago by Dave Pearce | 8 comments »

Have you ever gotten the feeling that if only you’d known more at the start of something, you’d have saved yourself a whole lot of time, effort, and money? Maybe it’s just the learning process, but there are a few things I wish I’d known ahead of time before I began buying hand tools for woodworking. In my attempt to document my own progress with the craft, hopefully I’ll provide a little insight into how I managed to assemble a working set of tools. Admittedl...

Assiniiboine Community College Woodworking course #2: Day 2 Late again!!!

1314 days ago by Mark Shymanski | 6 comments »

I used to hate students like me who know when the course starts but still show up late, mea culpa. I was 15 minutes late again today as I had to go into Winnipeg for my uncle’s funeral today. Usually we can drive in and out in good time but today the roads were terrible, with semis, pickups and cars littering the ditches along the Trans Canada… anyway we got there and back safely although at one point I thought I was going to have to attend a smash up on a bridge, but fortunatel...

Hello, My Lie-Nielsen 3/4” chisel and the fishtail, named Manfred and Donna respectively, did a great job today. We had lots of fun, despite me making one slight stratigic blunder. http://su.pr/3Y9evq Thanks, Brian

Irwin Chisels - New to Wood Working

1441 days ago by Muhamad Sara | 13 comments »

Hello Everbody, I’m brand new to wood working and new to lumberjocks and so far everybody on here has been wonderful and welcoming and I just have a quick question. I’m planning on buying my first set of chisels and I’m thinking about an Irwin 4-piece chisel set. I’ve read many reviews about Irwin Marples Blue Chip chisels but non about this set of Irwin Marple chisels. Are these good chisels? Heres a link: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xkk/R-10008965...

Chisel Sharpening - Another thorn from my side

1548 days ago by David Craig | 21 comments »

Good Morning, my name is David Craig and I am a former sharpaphobiac transformed into a sharpaholic… The art of sharpening has been very intimidating to me and it has really caused a bit of a road block to my work. No matter how many power tools you have in your collection, woodworking will ultimately lead you to a point where a chisel is in your hand and it needs to be sharp. I fiddled around with the grinder some, have purchased sharpening stones at the store, but I was really out ...

I'm Back...

1559 days ago by David Craig | 14 comments »

Sorry folks for my little hiatus from the LJ community. I had one week with an extremely busy work schedule followed by a week where my wife and I decided to make our separation permanent. Took a little bit of time to mull things over and have come to the conclusion it is best for both parties. I have a buddy who likes to jokingly remind me that I don’t know enough about women yet, that I was one marriage shy of being educated. On this, I will have to agree with him :) One good thing...

Cleared for Lumber Purchase

1584 days ago by Eric | 5 comments »

I promised myself that I would not build any new projects until I completed my workbench. I have been making do for so long with substandard setups (even winning a "Most Pathetic Workbench" award from Woodworking Magazine), that it takes me at least twice as long on any project than it would with a proper workbench (and even WITH a proper workbench, I will probably take three times as long as you would). It was time to draw the line in the sawdust and say enough is enough. I promised mysel...

Old Stanley Chisels #1: They're going to need some love

1631 days ago by Broooklyn | 0 comments »

I bought 5 old Stanley chisels for $15 and they need some attention. One of them has chipped corners and I’m not sure if he can be saved. Maybe a couple years on the grinder will help. I currently don’t own any sharpening tools, so it’s going to be a little while before I can tend to these guys. From reading and watching videos, there’s no way around learning how to sharpen your chisels, so I figured learning with a cheap set is a good idea. I need to figure out ho...
