I’ve noticed some Blogs and questions about sharpening chisels and I thought I give you my experiences and what I’ve designed.
I’m getting ready to teach a sharpening workshop for the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers club and I was working on my setup and techniques.
I own the Tormek Sharpening System , the Makita Sharpening System . I’ve used The Scary Sharp System and I build a modified Scary Sharp setup using cast iron plates and silicon carbide granules on the coarser grits and diamond paste...

Three lid choices.
DO NOT CUT THE LID TO SIZE UNTIL YOU ARE SURE OF THE STYLE OF BOX YOU WANT TO MAKE!
At the start of this tutorial I mentioned that we would look at three ways to make this box.
We are at a point in the project, where we need to decide how we want our lid to open. You will need to look at each type and decide which is your favorite or the easiest for you to make.
I suggest following on with this tutorial and weighing the pros and cons of construction, before making a f...

This is the fun part!
Up to this point, everything we have done has been carefully layed out and measured. This phase is more free form, its where we can cut loose a little, and see what we get.But a little care must be used or we can wind up with a ruined box. That happened on occasion when I first started playing around with this concept a few years ago.Just go slow and you will be fine.
I like to mount my box to the “Moaning Stool”,to keep it from moving. This places it at a...

Carving the curved letter section begins with the stop cut. I use a out cannel gouge that is close to the radius that has been layed out. If you don’t have an gouge close, you can work you centers down with a parting tool, or you can use the corner of your bench chisel to work carefully around the curve. when using your bench chisel, be aware of how deep your actualy cutting, just like before you can always clean up alittle deeper.I will try and work the curves in 1/4 sections (90 degre...

The handle.
You dont really need a handle to open this box.You can just press down on the top,at the back, and the front will lift up.
But a handle keeps the finger prints down and adds to the overall design too.It can accentuate the linear flow if it is long and delicate,or it may add more of a whimsical feel to the box if it is stubby and rounded. And it is a visual tie-in to the medallion if they are made from the same wood.
For this box, we are going to make a handle, and cut out ...

When I returned to woodworking several years ago my nephew had been talking about a particular style of “coffee” table he’d seen online somewhere and was describing it to me. Since he’d just announced plans to marry, I told him I’d make him, and his fiancée, the table as a wedding gift.
He showed me some online photos of the table, which I used as the basic, general design plan. The joinery I chose is original but the style was taken from the photos.
This piece is the result:

I am working on yet another piece and thought I’d share me project so far with you guys.
The Magnolia ‘Salicifolia’ tree had stood in the grounds of the Inner Temple on London’s Thames for over 80 years but due to a fungus it had to come down.
My original plan was to use the timber as a practice piece that I could use my new Arbortech grinder on, however whilst the guys where cutting the tree down the girl in charge of the gardens asked what I would do with the t...

So in the first of this series I mentioned i,m starting an enterprise with no money, hardware store hand tools and a sheet of 3/4 in plywood. This is what happened to the plywood. Now like many on this site i,ve long dreamed of building my ultimate workbench and I must tell you in advance that this is not it! This is my answer to that chicken and egg argument about needing to build a bench so that you can then build a bench. Its taken directly from Shopnotes and haveing seen numerous 1 sheet ...

Tommy’s last video hinted that one of the secrets to fine joinery is sharp chisels . . . or as we say in Boston “wicked shaaaahrp”. This video demystifies the secrets of chisel sharpening and clearly shows that a sharp chisel is more important than brand. While there are endless ways to sharpen tools, Tommy has found a process that works best for him. Bottom line . . . do your research, experiment, and find what works best for you . . . get those chisels sharp and start cutting dovetails!

I had seen this vintage sleigh in Wood magazine some time ago and I had to go searching to find it again. It was in December 1997, Issue 101 I believe that I’ve seen it somewhere else but I didn’t want to buy the article without searching further. One of the new officers at the Woodworking Club thought he might have it.
He did and he brought the magazine to me and i scanned it and created a pdf for future use and to keep from cutting up his magazine.
The sleigh was found at ...
