more simple carving 2

230 days ago by Harold | 9 comments »

Carving the curved letter section begins with the stop cut. I use a out cannel gouge that is close to the radius that has been layed out. If you don’t have an gouge close, you can work you centers down with a parting tool, or you can use the corner of your bench chisel to work carefully around the curve. when using your bench chisel, be aware of how deep your actualy cutting, just like before you can always clean up alittle deeper.I will try and work the curves in 1/4 sections (90 degre...

Vintage Seigh for Christmas

48 days ago by Karson | 12 comments »

I had seen this vintage sleigh in Wood magazine some time ago and I had to go searching to find it again. It was in December 1997, Issue 101 I believe that I’ve seen it somewhere else but I didn’t want to buy the article without searching further. One of the new officers at the Woodworking Club thought he might have it. He did and he brought the magazine to me and i scanned it and created a pdf for future use and to keep from cutting up his magazine. The sleigh was found at ...

Walnut Coffee Table Construction

242 days ago by Woodhacker | 13 comments »

When I returned to woodworking several years ago my nephew had been talking about a particular style of “coffee” table he’d seen online somewhere and was describing it to me. Since he’d just announced plans to marry, I told him I’d make him, and his fiancée, the table as a wedding gift. He showed me some online photos of the table, which I used as the basic, general design plan. The joinery I chose is original but the style was taken from the photos. This piece is the result: ...

Techniques & Methods #1: Scary Sharp Method

204 days ago by PurpLev | 15 comments »

so just like every other woodworker at one point (what’s up with the other every other woodworkers is beyond me…) I was researching and learning about ways to sharpen my chisels, planes, and other blade tools in the shop. Since I am the weekend warrior at this point, and I do not need to resharpen my tools THAT often, nor THAT much, I figure that I can do without any expensive powertools (there are several of those on the market) to sharpen blades and I dont really have the spa...

Wood Scrap Box #1: Parts and Pieces

356 days ago by CutNRun | 4 comments »

Two days before Christmas, my wife casually mentions that she would like a jewelry box. Hmmm, don’t think the timing was very good. Having completed the 2×4 project, I decided to try to put together a jewelry box from the small pieces of wood laying around in my shop. I had a decent amount of 1/2” cherry, some figured maple, some oak, and a small amount of paduk. After spending a few days laying out a design and seeing if I had enough wood, I started cutting and gluing.Th...

Congratulations to T-Chisel!

7 days ago by David | 7 comments »

Happy New Year to all my Lumberjock Buddies! I just reviewed the latest issue of Fine Woodworking online and saw one of our newest Lumberjocks has published an article. Congratulations to T-Chisel for getting his article on his Classic Step Stool published! You can also see a companion article where Tommy discusses his finishing process for this project. The Classic Step Stool was a Rough Cutter Forum project, one of three to date, that were built as a cooperative project via a ground-b...

Hand-cut dovetails #1: Graduation day: Hand-cut dovetails 101

27 days ago by Al Navas | 8 comments »

From my blog: I started my hand-cut dovetail journey this past September. In this post I share my graduation from Hand-Cut Dovetails-101. What a terrific day! As I have mentioned in those previous posts , I have been hand-cutting dovetails every chance I get. I prepared sycamore stock so that it would be at the ready when I have a little (or a lot…) of time to practice. Today I cut dovetails in three little practice boxes, with minimal paring on the pins. Oh – I almost forgo...

Divided Light doors #1: Divided light doors

76 days ago by Les Hastings | 12 comments »

The bow front vanity that I just posted has an upper portion with tall glass doors on each side with a curved bonnett going between them. I’ve been making the parts for the doors for a couple of days or so now. Finally getting started putting some of the muttins together. Sorry I’m going to blog how I go about this, it would be kinda tuff to explain I think. There is a lot to it. I just thought I would share some pictures of some of it with you all. There will be two doors lik...

A bow saw project #1: To Build a Bow Saw

144 days ago by Texasgaloot | 10 comments »

Before I can chronicle more of Moby Plank, which I’m itching to do, I need to get the mesquite legs and stretchers made. In order for me to complete the legs, which will be carved out of 5×5x 36 blocks of mesquite, I need a band saw much bigger than the little hobbiest one I have. I can’t afford a band saw until the project is completed, and I get paid. Hence a conundrum. After pondering possible possible solutions, and my wife objecting to me selling the kids, I struck u...
