In this episode I build a weight organizer for all of the free weights. It only took about 2 hours to build which is not a lot of time. I changed my design 2 times and Im glad I did because my original design would not have worked. I use 2 2×4s and 2 12 in 2×4s for the base.

This has been an off and on project for me for several months. I have put it on the back burner to take a few commisions and finally got around to working on the top. To make things easier on me from a time stand point I bought a premade butcher block top and added the aprons saving me the time of milling all that lumber. The first thing that I tackle is routing the tongue on each end that will support each end cap. I route a 3/4” groove on each end cap.
Next I layout the dove...

In this video I talk about how to make repeatable cuts using a stop block and how the miter joints are the best jointey option for the project. I also cut all the 2×4s and start assembly. Now all I did to assembly it was just glueing the divider pieces and screwing them in

I’ve been building a fence here at the house I’m renting (see blog). I ended up getting 2 sections out of one board as opposed to the 1 section I originally thought so I figured I’d use some of the material for a couple of projects. The first one is this bench, the second will be a carved screen door. This project is going to be a little tricky because I don’t really have “fresh” materials, nor do I have the thickness’s I would buy if this was goin...

I am working on yet another piece and thought I’d share me project so far with you guys.
The Magnolia ‘Salicifolia’ tree had stood in the grounds of the Inner Temple on London’s Thames for over 80 years but due to a fungus it had to come down.
My original plan was to use the timber as a practice piece that I could use my new Arbortech grinder on, however whilst the guys where cutting the tree down the girl in charge of the gardens asked what I would do with the t...

Dear fellow jocks,
I want to report to you all the “odd” woodcarving methods (with photos) that I have been using in the completion of the announced chest of drawers. So, please, click here.

I spent a lot of time developing a way to let the lid swing down into the box, yet still maintaining a fairly tight reveal on all four sidesThe difficulty is the lip itself. It doesnt allow the back of the lid to drop into the box, so thats where we need to cut it away a little deeper at the back. I call these pockets. The other difficulty is in getting the hinge placement spot on or it wont open at all or not far enough to stay open.
Here is how its done: Use the same pa...

This is where you need to decide how you want to open your box.
I mentioned at the outset about some of the different boxes I have made and how they hinge differently from one another. All are good, but you may have a preference in style or it may be your ability that decides for you.
The pin hinge is what we will mainly be focusing on and was used on this box.
Chapter 10 will discuss this style.
The Deco box uses a standard brass butt hinge with a stop stra...

I have made lots of progress and actually am using my new bench some, I’ve just needed to get an update here. After putting the top on the base, I marked out so I could start hand planing.I used my scrub plane to get things close, that’s the scrub plane’s results above, and then this #5 to get the top flat and without wind. Here’s a picture of the top in “near” flat and smooth. FYI, I ended up with about 45 gallons of shavings. To trim the ends to final le...
